"Auld Lang Syne" is a fucked up song.
Are they asking if we should forget old acquaintances, or saying we should?

I just want to forget Bush. The old acquaintances are fine.

That is all.

1. I believe in this sense, 'should' means 'what if'
This is Burns' original poem:

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind ?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And days o' lang syne ?

CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my jo,
For auld lang syne,
We’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

And surely ye’ll be your pint-stowp !
And surely I’ll be mine !
And we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

CHORUS

We twa hae run about the braes,
And pu’d the gowans fine ;
But we’ve wander’d mony a weary foot,
Sin auld lang syne.

CHORUS

We twa hae paidl’d i' the burn,
Frae morning sun till dine ;
But seas between us braid hae roar’d
Sin auld lang syne.

CHORUS

And there’s a hand, my trusty fiere !
And gie's a hand o’ thine !
And we’ll tak a right gude-willy waught,
For auld lang syne.

CHORUS

2. Ah, that old Scotsman!
I get to thinking about songs and their meanings, sometimes. The ones I really love are British, because the Brits can make some serious nonsense songs. Genesis and Duran Duran had some great nonsense songs. "Abacab" and "The Reflex" come to mind.

7. I always joked that Abacab was just the chords they used
And they just needed a reminder of them. Then I saw the sheet music for the song and, well, it really was the chords used for the song.

9. LOL!
That is funny! "I Know What I Want" was an early nonsense song by them I liked. Strange little narrative of a song.

6. Lots of people.
Running around in the hills and picking flowers? Child's play.

I certainly did it enough.

11. It's a drinking song. The whole thing's about drinking.
Or that could just be me ;)

13. Pretty much...
It's a 17th c. poem by Robert Burns about lost connections. Much of the song does concern either recollection of those memories or drinking and reconnecting.

Also, we can assume that Mr. Burns was cheap since he proposes that you buy a pint and we'll reconnect over long times ago. If I saw a friend I hadn't seen in years and wanted to reconnect, I'd probably buy them a pint rather than saying "Hey why don't you buy a pint."
