"don't ask for this file type" check box - IE
you know that little box that's there when you click a link and it asks you if you want to open it or save it? I accidentally hit it before choosing to open, and now it never asks for any downloads... i went through all the options, where can i turn it back on?

2. My cousin did that once
I forget where It was, when he finally found the solution to change It back.

What O/S are you using? ... Win 98 - 2000 - XP

4. Here you go....
From the menu in IE:

1) Tools | Internet Options
2) Click the Security tab.
3) Click the Custom Level button.
4) Scroll down to "Installation of desktop items"
5) Change that entry to "Prompt".

Enjoy!

7. Ok, try this:
1) Open Windows Explorer
2) From the menu, select Tools | Folder Options
3) Click the File Types tab
4) Find and highlight the type of file that you selected the "don't ask for this file type" option.
5) Click the Advanced tab.
6) Change the "Confirm open after download" box (check it if it's unchecked; uncheck it if it's checked).

See if that works. If not, let me know! (If it doesn't work, you'll probably want to go back in and reset it to its previous setting.)

6. Notify when downloads complete
Edited on Tue Mar-02-04 10:20 PM by Nomad559
1) Tools | Internet Options
2) advanced Tab

Is "Notify when downloads complete" checked ?

Edit ...

I seem to remember my cousin found the solution In windows, not In Internet Explorer.
Which Is why he had such a difficult time finding It.

8. Also on the Advanced tab....
If the type of file that you checked is a sound or video file, check the boxes for:

Play animations in web pages
Play sounds in web pages
Play videos in web pages

9. neither...
Edited on Tue Mar-02-04 10:27 PM by Goldom
the 'notify when complte' just makes the dl window not close. and the confirm open just makes it open after it downloads....

on edit: i hit it by mistake on mpg file, but it was doing it on mp3 too. mpg did not have an advanced button, so i checked that on mp3, and now it fixed both. kinda. im confused.

11. Registry hack.
If you have 6.0 SP1, there is an AlwaysPromptWhenDownload value that supposedly can be added (relatively safe) that might do the trick.

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 823057

There are (or should be) a whole bunch of individual values for filetypes too, but an addition is generally pretty safe. Be sure to back the registry up and use due care.

I hesitate to recommend that anyone hack the registry, but again an addition is relatively safe.

If this doesn't work then then it should be possible to hack individual values.

I read your last to say that your problem is fixed ... sometimes MS groups file types and applies the same registry settings to both.

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 320289 is an example of this.
