Women of DU, a question about your height
Do you recall if you stopped growing after you got your first period or did you end up getting taller?

4. I grew both up and out.
I figured the "out" part was expected so pay attention only to the "up"--ok?

6. wanting some anecdotal evidence to give to my 12 year old
She's only 4'9" and worried that she won't get any taller. Even though the doctor told her not to worry about it she is worried and I wanted to see if I could encourage her by finding examples of women who continued to get taller. I did stop growing in 6th grade so I can't use myself as an example :(

10. Ah! Well, I started at ten and didn't reach my adult height until 16 or 17.
I was half a foot taller than my mum and 3/4 of a foot taller than my gramma.

18. I grew up fast and was very tall for my age at 10.
Edited on Tue Dec-30-08 11:24 AM by lizzy
And then I basically stopped growing. I was taller than the other girls at age 10, but the other girls did grow and caught up with me by the age 13-14. I don't think it's likely your daughter will be tall, but hopefully she will get at least a couple of inches.

12. I grew until I was about 18, and
didn't really 'develop' until I was about 21. I had boobs, but no curves, until middle of college.

Though I did have a growth spurt at 12 (grew 5 inches in about 6 months), period at 13, and then another 2-3 inches in height from age 12 -18.

20. I grew another couple of inches
I started when I was 11 1/2. I know I was under 5 feet then, because I was only in 5th grade.

I'm '5 1" now.

I'd say a good indicator of your daughter's height would be to take a look at her grandparents. Are any of them tall?

For instance, I am very similar to my paternal grandmother physically. She was also on the petite side.

23. I grew a little more after...
Started at 12, probably stopped growing around age 14. I was always of above average height for my age, though, and ended up at right around the height I'd expect to be based on my parents' heights.

But that's all. I have clothes from around the time of menarche (I was 11) that still fit.

31. i got "taller" if by "taller" you mean i can't quite apply for disability as a midget
but, yes if you know a young woman who is terribly concerned about this, yes, you can add inches and height some years after your period starts, i didn't reach my full if laughable height until i was 14

good luck

33. I was still growing at least until just after college--
call it 22-ish? I started my period when I was just short of twelve and about 5 feet nothing, was about 5'4" out of high school, and put another two inches on after that. But my dad's side of the family is all tall people, so I lucked out. I'm taller than just about everyone male & female on my mom's side.
