4. I don't play online - we play weekly IRL with real tiles

I've never played the online one - I would miss the tiles clacking. Half the fun!

6. it's fun handling the real ones- they just feel nice in your hands.

Don't mind me - it's just fun to play with real tiles in the racks and on the table. We don't swear or gamble when we play, but it's still a lot of fun. If you want some real amusement, rent some of those Hong Kong Mah Jongg videos, some of em are hilarious. Lots of slapstick.

I never do anything else now. In fact, I suspect this is Rick Warren's secret
to building a huge church. I'm guessing he doesn't play mah jong.

13. If we could get him to start, we could destroy his empire from within.
I say we send him an invite to an online game.

15. Indeed. We need to make a list of all the people who should be playing
mah jong instead of spreading hate and evil. Some e-mail addies will be harder to get than others, but I think we've hit upon the way to win the battle between good and evil. Mah jong is the ultimate weapon!!

(we play at a local church afterwards) - so maybe there is some truth to that = I suspect there are some Zen and Taoist principles involved, anyway...

9. The tiles clack on my laptop. The cats love that noise.
They also like the fireworks when I win.

11. I've never played IRL, so I have a question.
How do you set up the tiles without knowing where the matches are? I mean, without the computer setting 'em up.

22. first you put all the tiles face donw in middle of 4 racks (arranged in a square)
Edited on Mon Dec-29-08 12:25 PM by tigereye
(one for each player) and then you stir the tiles with your hands (they are face down). Then you line them up against your racks in the front of each rack/player, also face down - lined up in rows of 2). One is the "dead" wall - the last one you pull from as the game starts to wind down.

Then you roll the dice and the highest number player goes first, after you push out a wall from the racks so you can start picking tiles in turn. Each player takes 4 tiles until you have 13 tiles from the wall each, and the player who starts gets 14, so that they can throw out the first tile face up to start the game. You put all of those 13 tiles facing you on your rack and sort them accordingly to suite, either dragons, numerical cracks, bamboo, winds, etc.

Then you either pick up a tile from the wall in the middle, or pick up the previous player's tile if you can put it out. Each player has to pick up and then discard each turn. I guess I think of it as sort of playing rummy, but with Chinese- themed tiles! Whomever majes first with the best combination of pungs (3 of a kind), runs or kongs (4 of a kind) wins!

I should look at the online one, since I don't know how different it is!

on edit, you don't know where the matches are - you have to make them yourself!
