Boston's first big storm kinda-live blog (very pic heavy)
Edited on Fri Dec-19-08 07:19 PM by sniffa
It started to flurry after 2pm, and here is a pic out of our porch at 2:30 pm

Just getting going, not too bad.

Here's 3pm. A little heavier but still not too bad.

A little worse at 3:30

The road's getting a little clunkier and I'm still shocked to see so many cars out at 4:00pm.

At 4:40pm a few cars begin to fail. Nothing major but I'm excited for the epic fails to come as the storm is just getting started.

5:30pm the road is a total shit now. More potential for fail.

At 6:00pm traffic is starting to lighten which is a good thing because it's starting to pile up. It's such a pretty storm.

Finally, at 6:30pm our first epic fail happens. A car gives up near the top of our hill and the driver gets out to try and do something but fails. Here it is parked in the snowy road with cars swerving around him.

I started this post around 7:00pm and before finishing I had to snap another 2 pix of fail.

Fail is still at it as I hit post.

8. Meh. At least I don't have to drive much then.
Tomorrow I'm going to Fresno. By way of San Francisco, because I'm picking up a friend. Bay Area traffic in the rain. Fun.

I need to stop making friends with people who don't drive. :P

12. That's good.
I really wish they'd let BART go to Sacramento like they'd originally planned, it'd be nice to be able to take the train to/from SFO.

Knowing Sacramento, it'd be faster than taking transit to SMF.

14. Back when they were building it they wanted to run it out here and the city said no.
All the downtown shopkeepers were afraid they'd lose business if people could go shop in San Francisco (I guess nobody'd told them about I-80?) and they killed the idea.

6. The pics with the lights are beautiful. I love snow.
Haven't had any meaningful snow here in 5 years. Hoping for some.

Last one we had, BoyM was in 6th grade and I had just picked up his glasses at the OD and dropped them off at school. TM was home in bed with strep, so I went to Tropical Smoothie for her.

In that extremely small span of time, the snow came down unlike anything I'd ever seen. (Mind you, I lived the first 30 years of my life in CT)

I am actually a pretty decent driver in the snow, having learned from the king, my dad. As I was progressing up the major road (like the one in your pics) towards my neighborhood, the guy in the jag in front of me stopped completely. Then he got out of the car and walked away. Seriously. :wow:

A little further up the road, a tractor trailer jackknifed. It was delightful.

I got home without incident and BoyM's bus was the only one that got out of the middle school on time. Most of the kids didn't get home until after 6PM. :wow:

BabyM, thankfully, was within walking distance, and my friend Lisa picked her up along with her friends because she had an SUV.

It was unreal. The little friends I volunteer with in SpED didn't even get on their bus to go home until after 7PM. :(

15. I've gotten more flat tires in the snow
I don't know what's up with that - there's nothing shittier than changing a tire in a snowstorm. Except maybe changing one in an ice storm.

Pretty storm but I have to say I don't miss snow. If I want it, I can drive to Tahoe. :hi:

18. we live at the top of a very steep hill, and one of our amusements when the
roads get bad here (and there is always more snow on top of this hill) is to see who is unable to get up the hill on the east side of our house, who chooses to brave the steep downhill on the south side of our house (and hopefully not hit the garage) and see if the salt truck gets stuck when it backs up and down the various hills.

Yes we are somewhat easily amused.

Nice pix, thanks! Be glad you don't have to drive in it...
