Is it possible to be misdiagnosed as gifted?
Um, 3 times?

Seriously. I'm apparently gifted (well, my verbal score is very, very high, and my non-verbal score is, like, perfectly average), and I don't feel very smart.

It's not just me. My fellow "gifties" don't find me very intelligent either. I don't even talk in my English class anymore because I feel like everything I say will be mocked.

Oh yeah, and I told some of them I got early acceptance to one of the universities I applied to and they didn't believe me. As if I'm too dumb for it, or something.

Screw you, child psychologist who told me I was "gifted".

1. I thought that was typical of Asperger's patients.
Generally linguistic scores are high, math scores less so and social anxiety makes them seem a bit clueless to others.

That pretty much desbribes me too.

3. I apparently don't actually have asperger's.
(Username amnesty, please, Skinner?)

I might have some kind of visual processing/non-verbal LD, though, apparently.

2. Maybe you can do cool stuff that you haven't discovered yet
you know.. like blow fly-away spit bubbles, tie cherry stems in your mouth, see flaws in solved equasions, always land on your feet... etc :P

4. Why do you care
what the other kids think? Maybe they are jealous of you? When I started my job, I picked up complex techniques (that it took other guys years to figure out) pretty quickly. I work in construction, alot of the senior men in the local didnt want to work with me, I guess they saw me as some kind of wise ass or someting. Once they worked with me the first time, and I was completely differential and respectful. They were cool. Dont worry about it, its their problem, not yours...

5. STOP!!!!!!!
People who are highly or profoundly gifted NEVER fit society's idea of smart--trust me! And, pm me if you want to talk about it. This is one area in which I am truly an expert, though all my knowledge is through personal experience with my kids and their friends. Go to hoagiesgifted.org and look around at hg,eg, and pg info--see if anything rings true. Do not despair or redefine yourself according to people who don't know what they are talking about. PLEASE--all said with the care of a mom. Hugs to you!

6. Just my opinion, but I think you are putting too much emphasis on intelligence
learn to be secure in who you are. It doesn't matter one way or the other what other people think. What's important is that you live life by your values and try to do the best you can.

7. There is no more crippling diagnosis for a child than 'gifted'
Well, obviously that's an exaggeration, but I'm making a point.

The moment the "gifted" brand is burned into the kid's forehead, a whole slew of reasonable and unreasonable expectations comes along with it.
