9. I'm not sure, but I suspect that I'll get A's in both of my classes.
At this point grades really aren't important. I can tell you all you want about Gramsci, though. :P

my first qtr of grad school ends on saturday, though. :bounce:

i've got a final tonite and one on saturday, then i'm done!

wish me luck!

it's a big deal for me to be back in school again after 22 yrs. i'm working towards a masters in counseling psychology.

did you appreciate my little story about changing the font from times new roman to courier for a paper? it instantly made a 6 page paper into a 9 page paper!

:hi:

congrats and enjoy your holiday break. what are you getting your master's in? :toast:

6. LOOOOONG TIME!
How'd you make that decision? Such an important field!

18. I was open and ready to make the commitment.
I decided it's time to take my natural skills to the next level.

It helps that my kids are older now, too. 12 and 15. It's been a huge adjustment for the entire family, too, since I've basically been a stay-at-home mom all this time.

:hi:

8. Wow. I "only" took 13 years off.
Good on you for getting back into it -- and for choosing a field that makes such a big contribution to people's lives.

19. Thanks, leftyclimber!
I'm past the freak-out stage and have moved into the I-can-do-this! stage..... :D

After 22 yrs of being out of academia, the initial learning curve was pretty damn steep.

But I've almost made it thru my first qtr! Onward and upward...

12. Oh yeah - I remember your story, yes.
:P Unfortunately if I had done that for my final exam essays, my subterfuge would have been obvious. :P

I'm getting a PhD in Communications (Media Studies)

20. I hope my teachers don't look at my typestyle as "subterfuge" !
my APA format program, in which ALL our papers have to be written, only gives a choice between two typestyles, one's incredibly dinky and the other looks like normal typewriting and is a bit bigger.

It was an obvious choice. :D

Good for you on the PhD. Enjoy your holiday break. :toast:

22. Hehehe
did you appreciate my little story about changing the font from times new roman to courier for a paper? it instantly made a 6 page paper into a 9 page paper!

Oh boy. I'd never get away with that--my professors all *insist* on at least Times New Roman 12pt, double-spaced, 1-inch margins, MLA format only. Slightly smaller fonts (like Calibri 11pt) are okay too, so long as it's not something being submitted for publication. Of course, the vast majority of my paper-writing has been for English classes, so obviously English profs are more likely to catch you and kick your ass for little things like that. This isn't usually a problem with me, though--I tend to write much MORE than I need to, rather than less. My final paper for English 102 needed to be 8-10 pages long. It was actually 16 pages long. My poor professor--I actually felt sorry for him, lol.

7. Congrats! How many do you have to go?
I've just finished my seventh semester, three more to go (not counting summers).

It's one of the most agonizing things I've ever been through, but the prize at the end is FANTASTIC!

:bounce:

(or at least, so they tell me.... )

But they cap us at 6 years. If I don't finish the process in 6 years, I start losing credits.

23. We have a five-year cap in my program
But I'm doing the doc in three (social science). They counted my M.S. credits toward the doctorate, which is good. I would have had to take a bunch of classes over otherwise and probably would have used the whole five.

15. high-five!
yay! :)

As of this weekend, I will be 1/2 way done with my PhD program. I finished my massive(ly stressful) progress report today and will hand it in tomorrow - it is such a fucking relief. I didn't even remember what it was like to not have something constantly hanging over my head.

16. Yeah, it's odd not having another 300 pages of reading to do...
or yet another reading synopsis, or outlining everything to present to class, etc.

Your progress report - I guess that's something similar to what I have to do in the spring - sort of a plan of action?

21. not exactly
It's really a synopsis of where my research is going - a demonstration of the fact that I know what I'm doing, and that they haven't been wasting their time and money on me for the past 18 months. Part of what made it difficult is that it had to be under 6,000 words (I included supporting documents that I didn't count in there). It's still not over.... I have to be interviewed about it some time, and if I don't pass that interview, I'm in trouble - it should be ok though. I can talk about my work very clearly - I'm just a poor academic/writer/etc.

I hope your next semester is better than this past one..... I sure as fuck hope that's the case for me. The past few months have been the worst fucking period of my entire life.
