How to shop for those you hate? Tips on getting holiday presents for people who suck.
Edited on Fri Dec-12-08 09:40 AM by BlueIris
In my case, it's a...let's just call him a relative. I don't think he's going to be one that much longer, so I don't want to waste much money trying to make our relationship better, smooth things over, etc. But not sending a gift isn't an option. I have to find something cheap and not overtly offensive (ie; something that doesn't say, flat-out, "I hate you and can't stand having to shop for you, thank God I probably won't be doing it next year").

I'm thinking soap.

But considering I'm trying to avoid suggesting his relationship with my relative is not long for this world, I probably shouldn't.

I don't know what I would do in that case. I like most of my relatives, blood and by marriage/relationship.

How about $20-$25 worth of gift certs to a semi-decent fast-food place...
say Arby's, Subway or Quizno's??

They'll get you off the hook, are actually useful (not a waste of $$$), and won't make you look like a jerk.

Eh...it's an idea...

Edit for spelling
I hate catching the error just as I hit "post"...:grr:

10. Yes, I'm serious.
I don't want to go the gift certificate route, but I guess I will if I have to.

12. I loved my grandfather but he was a pain to shop for
But he loved Chocolate Covered Cherries. I'd get him a box each year. For awhile he would also ask for a Marty Robbins or Frankie Yankovic Cassette (this is when Cassettes were on the way out) so I would find those for him too.

17. He's an in-law. I'm sending his spouse a bunch of presents and in order not to alienate her
(I'll want to help during the divorce) I had to send something to him as well. But I might not next year. It was just too degrading. He is such an asshole.

16. I went with soap. Four little sample bars of nice...ish handmade soap.
$2.00 total. I'm kinda proud of me.

19. Classic...
you need a hand-made pottery soap-dish made from clay and acrylic paint that looks like you stole it from a 2nd grader. I'm speaking from experience here.

My mother has one she got (along with scented fancy soaps) from a relative 20 years ago that she still grumbles at. It was a lovely gift...

20. Ohhhh, dude, I almost bought one *exactly* like that today.
Handmade, very amateurish. But it would have bought the purchase total up to $12.00 and I just couldn't bring myself to spend that much on him.

18. An origami set.
A former sister-in-law who hated my guts got me one. Message received.

At least my gift to her (a gift certificate to Amazon) was practical.
