1. Johnny Cash's Hurt
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmVAWKfJ4Go

The original Nine Inch Nails was great as it is. Cash's is even better.

32. It all comes out in the video, too...
...the juxtaposition between the Johnny Cash singing the song and the archive footage of a "Folsom Prison / San Quentin"-era Johnny and June romping about was just as chilling as the song itself...especially since he'd just lost her.

Trent Reznor may have written the song, but he gave up ownership the minute Cash wrapped his pipes around it.

:patriot:

15. The Bangles did a bang-up job w/ that one
I also like UB40's version of "Can't Help Falling in Love" (you know, the Elvis song)

and I think that when Sting added a saxaphone to "Little Wing" (Hendrix) he made that song new.

Gotta love Aretha Franklin's "R-E-S-P-E-C-T"

19. "Respect" by Aretha Franklin.
The original was written and first performed by the great Otis Redding, but her version was completely different and one of the greatest soul classics of all time.

Otherwise, not sure if it's the best but Tool did a good version of No Quarter? :D

Nothing like the original but tasteful with a bit of their own flavor? :)

23. Four nominees
The Alarm: "Knockin' On Heaven's Door"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vmenyj8CXfo
(There's a better version on a 12" b-side from 1986)

Big Country: "Hey Hey My My (Out of the Blue)"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9LZNl4jwaU

The Bangles: "Going Down To Liverpool"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWC2-MFwWr8
(Originally recorded by Katrina & the Waves)

The Sidewinders cover of "Solitary Man", which turns a cheesy Neil Diamond song into an angry squall of Crazy Horse-meets-Nirvana feedback. Sorry, can't find it online.
