How often do you take in your recycling?
Edited on Tue Dec-02-08 10:57 AM by redqueen
I do it at least once a week. I can't stand it when I see people pull up to the bin with five or six giant garbage bags stuffed nearly to bursting with crap. The openings on the only bin in town are about 1'x2'. This morning I shoved in my 2 bags and helped this lady who must have been saving it up in the garage for a month.

And another thing, do you fold empty cardboard boxes? I hope so. Some eejit where I live apparently thinks it's their right to hog up all the room in the bin by just shoving their boxes in there whole.

Also, do you just drop bags off next to the bin, because you're too lazy to even bother trying to put them inside? I think this lady I helped was about to do just that until I told her that you can shove a lot of the stuff out of the way.

Irritating, I tell you. Inconsiderate, that's what it is.

On the bright side, at least they're bringing it to the bin. :)

1. every couple weeks because..
because Arlington picks up almost all our recycling every Friday at the curb.. I flatten out everything that's paper of cardboard and put rope around it and set that on top of our recycling bin.

Right now they only pick up paper, cans and plastic 1's and 2's. We have to drive the rest of the plastics to a dump nearby about twice a month. But soon they're going to start picking up EVERYTHING from us every week. I'm always saying I can't wait to get out of this suburb but that's the one thing I really like about living here.

6. my recycling is picked up every two weeks
and I return cans and bottles when I remember to the store. I don't drink much beer or soda so that does not amount to much. I do find it shocking to get to the grocery store to return the bottles/cans and people are there with a cart FULL of beer cans - damn - that must stink!

We get a wheeled bin to put in paper, metal and plastics.

My city doesn't recycle glass at all and I really wish they did. :(

30. Glass can be endlessly melted down and re-used, by glassblowers and others.
Edited on Tue Dec-02-08 01:49 PM by kwassa
In my brother's town, there are three huge open-sided dumpsters for glass at the re-cycling center, one for clear glass, one for green glass, and one for brown glass. Everyone is encouraged to break glass as they heave their bottles into the respective dumpsters. Very therapeutic.

In my town, we have weekly pick-up of everything.

10. Ours is picked up every other week
and, we have single-stream recycling, so everything recycleable gets dumped into a huge blue garbage can and I don't have to worry about sorting it out.

18. They come to our curb every two weeks
but we usually have several bins filled by then. I just kept adding stuff and seeing what would fly. Styrofoam and green bottles have been the only rejects, but we save the green bottles for my sister or dad, whose recycler accepts them. We also compost, so we maybe fill one kitchen trash bag a week on average.

The town makes it so easy, I would say about three-quarters of the neighborhood complies to some degree.

24. We have biweekly curbside pickup for most recycling
I save our aluminum cans in the shed until I have enough to merit taking them to the recycling center. That usually means about two big garbage bags full.

The setup of that place is different from what you're describing is a lot different, though. It's an actual scrap yard that handles recycling.

We also have a drop-off center consisting of about a dozen blue dumpsters. It's monitored by video, and they'll fine you if you just leave your bag o' shit on the ground.

Edited on Tue Dec-02-08 01:35 PM by Kali

About every 4 to 6 months I haul cans 25 miles to donate to the firefighters that put on the 4th of July fireworks show. There is no recycling here. (although rumor has it we may finally be getting some bins in the rural areas soon)

ETActually answer the question

Now we have a bin in town! And we're up to TWO stoplights! :bounce:

33. the town where I donate the cans has two but my "main" town
got its third when Walmart invaded.
The county actually has transfer stations scattered around in very rural areas, but town is easier for me. I burn paper and organics get chucked out for "compost" (read: dogs, chickens, skunks) Used to have a dedicated broken glass pile, but it got washed away in a flood and now there is glass all down that wash. It will eventually become sand again, but I stopped doing it after that. I hope they have a glass bin when they finally get things set up.

I take it to the actual recycling center where they'd rather see you once with much than see you too often with too little. :P

Don't even have to sort it. It all goes in one 64-gallon bin.

I break down and fold boxes and rinse cans and bottles.

32. I don't. Not directly anyway.
I have an old wooden firewood bin that I toss my recyclables into. There's a poorer family up the road from me that cleans the bin out once a week and turns my recyclables in for money. The deal is, they get to keep the money for the glass and metals, but they have to turn in any cardboard or paper too. We've been doing this for four years now and it works out pretty well for everyone.

they take it with the garbage.

Alas, no colored glass, plastic or paper other than newsprint - it's fairly primitive.
