Are Female Cats Better Mousers?
The mice are coming in from the cold, so my daughter is getting a cat. She wants a female cat because male cats are lazy, she says. I've never heard it broken out by gender before, only that some cats are naturally more talented. In fact, of all the tales of legendary mousing I've heard, nobody has mentioned gender.

What correlates with being a badass mouser - a hungry kittenhood? Or is my daughter right, that females are just quicker and smarter all around?

1. i think females are better mousers
because they have a natural instinct to kill to feed their young. even if they are fixed (which of course they should be) i think they still enjoy the hunt more than the boys do. we have two boys and one girl. they each get a bird every now and then, but the girl is always the one who gets the mice.

Ridiculous rom hacks. Funny in a 'lose your faith in humanity' sort of way.

8-bitsploitation should be a new video game genre.

3. In my personal experience, yes--significantly better.
But I don't know if my own experience is indicative of anything larger.

The absolute best hunter-cats that I've ever had were always females--particularly, females who'd had kittens at some point in their lives.

4. I don't know. I had a male cat who was a fantastic mouser.
He was like...the Mouse Terminator. He'd gobble up whole families of them, even the babies.
Our current, female cat is not a good mouser. She's a great HUNTER, but she only catches stuff outside, never mice in our house.

12. That's nature. Pleasant or not. With the parents dead, the babies were going to die anyway.
Mice are rodents and pests. I feel no sympathy for them.

15. I do think that mice are cute, and I have saved a few of them from a hungry cat.
But only a few.

6. I've had both males and females and they've all been equally good mousers.
Actually, when the female got older, she got bored with mouses. I once saw one scamper right in front of her across the room where she was lying. She just watched it all the way across the room. Couldn't bother to be gotten up.

It could be because she knew I would just save it and take it from her though.

10. Try a dog.
Our Siberian Husky Shadow - she caught more mice than our cat ever did.

17. Maybe the females are better because they have to provide food for their kittens.
However, I had a boy cat once who was an accomplished mouser. He even caught a bat once by leaping up and swatting it out of the air.
