Just curious... What is your definition of "hometown"?

I notice that people have different meanings for it. I always thought it was the place where you grew up or spent most of your pre-adult life, but some people call their current town their hometown whether they've always lived there or are relatively new to the area. Some people have places they just moved to for the first time as their "hometown" on Facebook. I still consider my hometown to be the town where I lived until I was 18, even though my parents don't live there anymore.

I don't think there is a right or wrong answer, I just thought it was interesting. :shrug:

1. I moved around a lot as a kid

I lived in four different places by the time I was 8. But then we moved to a town and stayed there and that's what I consider my hometown. It's the place I go back to and refer to as "going home."

I consider my hometown to be the place I grew up and came of age, but I can see how people would have other definitions if they've lived in a place for a long time as an adult.

2. Where i grew up and spent my first 30 years is my hometown, where i live now is a weight station

until we move in 5 years to the coast.

3. Depends

Where I went to high school is where I usually tell people I'm from. I also tell people that where I grew up before I moved that I'm from there. I also say where I live now is my hometown.

4. For me, hometown is where I grew up

But my husband is one of those people who moved around a lot as a child, so hometown is where he lives now. And it annoys him to no end when I say "going home to WV" in reference to visiting my family, because to him home is where we live with one another.

5. it depends

It depends on the context of the conversation and could be one of four places (birth to age 9, ages 10-18, 22-39, 40-56). I can easily refer to a home state as I've resided in CT for 92% of my life (and which includes all four of my 'hometowns'). Sometimes I've had dual residency in other states but it is always the CT towns that are called home.
