21. Jeepers, There's Some Solid Stuff There!
I'll just pick off a few that I'd whole-heartedly second. I'd take Highway 61 over Blonde on Blonde, either one of Marley's first albums over Legend, BB's Live at the Regal over Best of, and so forth, but all of these are top tier.

James Brown - Star Time (Polydor, 1991)
--Every song is a treasure, and the damn thing is...he's got tons more stuff in his catalog! In the Jungle Groove, JB's Funky People...

Sam Cooke - The Man and His Music (RCA, 1986)
--I love this album! Be careful, its outta print now.

Judy Henske - High-Flying Bird (Elektra, 1964)
--I can't believe someone else has heard of Henske!!!!!!!!!! What a voice! And they finally got around to putting her on CD!

Van Morrison - Astral Weeks (Warner Brothers, 1968)
--As a music loving dork, I always debate myself over which album is better, this or Moondance.

Sly & The Family Stone - There’s A Riot Goin’ On (Epic, 1971)

Rod Stewart - Every Picture Tells A Story (Mercury, 1971)

Stevie Wonder - Songs in the Key of Life (Tamla, 1976)
--Have you seen his new box set? Excellent song choices.

All the various artists choices are top-notch. I LOVE Tougher Than Tough, top to bottom!

Now, I don't know anyone that could be this into music and not be into music writers as well. Any favorites? Christgau? Lester Bangs? Guralnick?

29. On music writers....

Yes, I like Peter Guralnick. Jimmy Guterman has written some good stuff too, as have some of the lesser-knowns like Steve Propes and Pete Grendysa.

And as angry as some music fans become over the mere mention of his name, I also like Dave Marsh (who I happen to know personally). In fact, I'd cite Marsh's 1989 book, "The Heart of Rock and Soul: The 1001 Greatest Singles Ever Made," as one of the biggest influences on my musical tastes.

37. I'm Looking At It On My Bookshelf!
Great book. I've probably read it 3x over since I got it.

Probably the most influential for me would be Christgau's guide to the 80's, because it was the first time I ever thought of records as aesthetic objects to be thought about. Before then I basically bought anything with at least 3 songs I liked (not the most systematic system).

Another influence is the Rolling Stone Illustrated History of Rock. Great essays.

If you ever get the chance, check out Lester Bangs writing about Astral Weeks in Psychotic Reaction. It is the single most beautiful, and even profound writing on music I've ever come across. And his essay on Bowie's Station to Station is pretty incredible too.

James, Laid. Brilliant pop, very experimental.

Jiang Xiao-Qing, Breathing Spaces. Totally different. You can hear an excerpt or two here. Asian music with a new age feel, very peaceful. Interestingly, the CD came with 4 sticks of incense.

27. I Know - I Was a Tough Call
I figured that Bryter Layter was more accessible, and that is impossible to just have one Nick Drake album.

32. Paul Cebar & the Milwaukeeans...
(am I their only fan on DU?)

Specifically, "Upstroke for the Downfolk", but all of Paul Cebars stuff is outstanding. He takes everything that is good and true about American (North and Latin) music (plus some African stuff) and mixes it all together to produce a uniquely groovy sound with highly literate lyrics. Some funk, some R&B, some rock, some Latin rhythms, some soul, some blues. It's all good...I guess the best way to describe it is party music for adults. "Suchamuch" is a recent live album, also highly recommended.

36. Three recent greats

Boy in Da Corner by Dizzee Rascal

Electric Version by the New Pornographers

Guitar Romantic by the Exploding Hearts

The first album is the future of rap as an art form, the second is the catchiest pop album of the last two years, and the third is the life-affirmingly energetic release by the Exploding Hearts, a band whose members recently passed away in a tragic van accident.

39. anything by the Dave Brockie Experience.
its so juvenile, its so silly, its so fun. it borders insanity with its simplistic genius. the songs are all catchy, some make sense, others he doesn't even attempt to explain, or for them to make sense. just sit back, drink a few beers (or if you're like me, a sprite), and enjoy.

45. here's how-
1. with the cursor on the selected image, right-click once. This should bring up a menu(?) box...

2. At the bottom of the box, left-click once on properties. This will bring up another window with the general properties of the pic.

3. In that window, select(highlight) the entire URL shown at: "Address". Do this by holding down on the left mouse button and dragging the cursor across the shown URL, so that the address is highlighted.

4. Right-click once on the highlited address. This will bring up a smaller menu box-

5. In that box, left-click once on "copy". You now have the URL of the picture ready to paste.

6. When you are composing your message and the cursor reaches the point where you want to place the pic, right-click once. This will bring up the small menu again.

7. This time, select "paste". The URL for the pic will be placed there, and when you post your message, the pic will display.

Many excellent, excellent suggestions on this thread.

Yo La Tengo – Painful
Feelies – The Good Earth
Camper Van Beethoven – Our Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart

62. Lots of good ones already
I think all the Corrs' CDs are wonderful. But Forgiven, Not Forgotten is probably too forgotten, so that one was a good one to mention.

Completely agree with Cindy Alexander, New Pornographers (genius pop,) Radiohead's The Bends, and Dar Williams, too. I'd put in Guster's Keep It Together, and haven't bought the new David Gray yet. And this doesn't cover all the ones I've seen and agree with here.

More:

Regina Carter - Motor City Moments (since there's a lot of jazz here)
Abra Moore - any of hers
Leona Naess - I Tried To Rock You But You Only Roll
Kay Hanley - Cherry Marmalade
Brad Paisley - Mud On The Tires
Nina Gordon - Tonight And The Rest Of My Life
Plumb - Beautiful Lumps Of Coal
Gavin DeGraw - Chariot
Neil Finn - One All
Bleu - Redhead
Everyone knows about Michelle, Pink, Vanessa, new Mandy, and Avril, so I'll recommend Lillix, Lucy Woodward, Alex Bach, Angela Ammons, M2M, and Rachel Farris
Letters To Cleo - any
Maria McKee - High Dive (haven't bought it, but sounds great)
Jayhawks - Rainy Day Music and Smile
Jo Davidson - Kiss Me There
Laura Dawn - Believer
Painkillers - Medicine For The Soul
Zwan - Mary Star Of The Sea
Fountains Of Wayne - Welcome Interstate Managers
Rosanne Cash - Rules Of Travel
Duncan Sheik - Daylight
Shana Morrison - 7 Wishes
Phantom Planet - The Guest
Kina - self-titled
Bree Sharp - Cheap And Evil Girl, More B.S. (talented and very attractive!)
Sixpence None The Richer - self-titled, Divine Discontent
Sleater-Kinney - One Beat
Anna Waronker - Anna
Kasey Chambers - The Captain, Barricades And Brickwalls
Kim Richey - self-titled,
Miranda Lee Richards - The Herethereafter
If you like heavy music, Lennon - 5:30 Saturday Morning. I enjoy it, even though I'm not a huge heavy music fan
Ralph Stanley - self-titled
Linda Thompson - Fashionably Late
Stella Soleil - Dirty Little Secret (hard to resist this one)
Evan And Jaron - self-titled
Carolyn Dawn Johnson - Room With A View
Jennifer Hanson - self-titled
Brooks And Dunn - Red Dirt Road
Alison Krauss and Union Station - Now That I've Found You - a collection (in case you forgot about this masterpiece)
Loreena McKennitt - Book Of Secrets
Kelly Willis - Easy
Dolly Parton - The Grass Is Blue
Amy Ray - Stag (almost as good as the Indigo Girls' stuff)
Suzanne Vega - Songs In Red And Gray

and more..
