8. Jesse Mae Hemphill
from Wiki:
"Jessie Mae Hemphill (October 18, 1923 – July 22, 2006), was a pioneering electric guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist specializing in the primal, northern Mississippi country blues traditions of her family and regional heritage."

She didn't start her recording career unti the early 80's andreleased 2 albums. In 1993 she suffered a stroke that paralyzed her left side but she continued to sing in church.

Check out Woodstock (I think it was more a Blues festival than a rock festival):

Also check out Allman Brothers Band, Stevie Ray Vaughn and for more "pure blues" Jimmy Reed and the great Muddy Waters.

16. You're missing some
All these years and Second Winter is still one of those albums I play regularly. I'm not crazy about his 50's-era stuff (Johnny B. Goode et al), but for blues, you don't get better than Johnny.

And how about Mountain?[br />
If you're looking for a guitar whiz, we've been watching Derek Trucks in SW FL since he was what--12? Awesome kid. (I think he's still touring with the Allman Bros. as well as his own band.)

22. Great thread, huh?
You are correct; I was incredibly amiss leaving Johnny Winter out. Haven’t heard of Mountain, the link doesn’t help, and I even tried a search. Derek Trucks is awesome, thank you for that introduction. :hi:

26. Ye gods, I feel old
Apparently Mountain is a hopelessly 60s band. . . They played at Woodstock, but ended up on the cutting room floor, I think. Leslie West, Felix Pappalardi (from Cream). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nantucket_Sleighride_(album)">Nantucket Sleighride was probably their biggest album, and Mississippi Queen the song that made it to any kind of airplay (please note healthy dose of cowbell--and didn't that wind up in Guitar Hero or similar game?) They tended to be more rock than blues, but kind of straddled the line in places, I guess. I think what's left of the band (Felix was shot by his wife years ago) is still touring with Joe Satriani these days.

15. Go to the originals - Blind Willie McTell, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters,
Howlin' Wolf, Willie Dixon, Jimmy Reed, Little Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson - they will lead you out to more and more. The blues is deep and wide, and I wish you a very enjoyable trip through it.
