Minions! The Coyote howls again!
All is well in northern AZ! KadeCarrion and I arrived 8 days ago, and just received our household goods yesterday. Kiko weathered the 1500 mile journey from Seattle very well, sleeping most of the way without the aid of tranqs or the like. The car was packed to the hilt. Who needs rearview mirrors anyway? We already feel at home, too. Flagstaff is in the heart of AZ pine country, with beautiful peaks and friendly small-town folk.

I do not miss Seattle, and other than my old friends there, I don't even give it any thought.

A few tips and observations from our travels:

A/C in the car is the single greatest invention, ever. Bar none.

Boise, Idaho may be the single most boring college town of all time. Finding a place to eat downtown can be trying. Everything closes by 7 or 8, and road-weary travelers who arrived at 9 can have a helluva time finding something to eat. Avoid Boise.

Utah is scary. We stopped for food and fuel at a Qwik-E-Mart type of place somewhere north of Salt Lake, and the people there were scarier than anyone I ever encountered in years of living south of the Mason-Dixon.

Utah is painfully white, and Salt Lake City flat out sucks. They took a perfectly good landscape of mountains and a large lake and put smokestacks and oil refinery works everywhere. Not impressed in the least. The drivers pretend to be obnoxious east coast drivers, cruising at 85 during rush hour, and they think by using their turn signals when they cut you off, they are being polite. No surprise we had gridlock due to a multi-car accident on the interstate through town. One car was on its side. Not even Seattle had that many bad drivers, and the jams were an all too recent reminder of one of the reasons I do not miss it there.

Be sure to get gas and pee in Vegas before heading east. After you leave the Hoover Dam, there are no rest stops on a desolate stretch between Lake Mead and Kingman.

Best Western is the best cheap hotel in the world, period.

And...

Northern Utah really sucks. Just thought I'd mention it.

:donut:

Glad to be here!

1. Greetings!
:hi:

Flagstaff...isn't that the first international dark-sky city?

4. Yep!
It's that, and at an elevation of 6900 feet, this sea-level child will need some readjustment. I am a lifelong astronomy buff, so the home of the Lowell Observatory is just fine by me!

2. i really really agree with you on SLC
On our last family vacation to the Grand Canyon, we passed through SLC and I remember thinking it was one of the most ugliest cities anywhere. Sourthern Utah was quite beautiful, Kanab was very pretty.

Glad to hear that your trip was safe.

7. I can't leave you alone for a week!
Or 10 days. :-)

I am using Desertrose's computer, since I still do not have an ISP as of yet. Just got my computer yesterday, so it won't take long. We're in Sedona today, and Katy will be spending time with her best friend while her brother Andy and I see Los Lobos at the Putomayo World Music festival today.

(Thanks for letting me borrow the term "painfully white" - it came in handy!)

:hi: to you and John!

10. twice!
In 1987 at the Boathouse in Norfolk, VA, and in '98 at the Pier in Seattle. This will make once for every decade since the 80's, lol.

I have all but one of their albums - and that will be rectified soon. :-)

While you were gone; sometime this week, I believe DU voted you the most "honest poster" or something like that. I didn't check the poll after the first time I saw it. I just thought you'd like to hear everything they said about you while you were away.

22. BWAHAHAHA!!!
I would sneer mightily at that slip from grace, except that in a real pinch, when no other source of my drug of choice is available, I have been known to eat dry Taster's Choice right from the jar.
