Dr. Phil
I've always found his show interesting but it's one of my guilty pleasures and I don't admit it openly that I watch it. It's not exactly pimp programming for a 20 year old male.

I watched one of his shows recently and it was "Spend a Day with Dr. Phil." I was quite disturbed. In it, Dr. Phil goes on a variety of meaningless trips with 3 women who treat him as if he were Tom Cruise and who basically drool all over him for the whole day.

Then, the show changes gears and Dr. Phil introduces a muppet character that has been made in his image: "Dr. Feel." The character will be appearing on Sesame Street soon evidently.

I understand Dr. Phil is a celebrity but I feel as though the wool has been removed from over my eyes. He's such a sellout it's almost sickening. :( Ugh! What was I thinking?

Anybody have any thoughts on his show or have any actual success in life from watching?

3. I know
It's disturbing. Why did it take me this long? Most of these guys I really do see right through. I believe that (like Oprah) Dr. Phil may have hypnotic powers over his audience!!

2. Well, he helped me with my weight struggle.
Edited on Fri Feb-27-04 10:10 PM by gmoney
When I saw that a fellow fatass like him can write a bestselling diet book, I realized that I must be qualified myself, and therefore I must be thin. The height/weight charts are just outdated for big-boned guys like me and Phil.

I could swear Dr. Phil is played by Jeffrey Tambor, a.k.a. Hank Kingsley from The Larry Sanders Show.

19. Was he also a Disney actor at one time?
There's a Disney actor that also looks a lot like Dr Phil. It's one reason I've never been quite able to take him seriously.:)

23. Hey now!
I agree about the resemblance. I hope Jeffrey gets to play him in "The Rise and Fall of Dr. Phil," the made-for-TV movie that will undoubtedly be produced once this blowhard bully egotist slips up and loses the adulation and big bucks he's been raking in. He's a bad, bad man. There are worse. But he's bad.

Dr. Phil, 6'4", 257.
BiggJawn, 6'4", 287.

So he's only got 30 pounds on me, and he's a DIET GURU?

Hey, Phil, how's that working for you?

5. Actually he helped me
with some parenting issues, but I stopped watching (I was a daily watcher) when he had Media Benjamin on and blasted her by saying she was hurting our troops by not supporting the war. I've been Dr. Phil free for almost a year now, and life goes on - I now watch Judging Amy reruns on TNT at 4 PM (Dr Phils slot) since I can only take 1/2 of Judy the slut's Inside (supposed) Politics.

6. Dr Phil, 35th anniversary mush also starring Joe Hundred Guy...
:eyes:

http://www.muppetcentral.com/news/2004/011304.shtml

Yes, this surely will appear appealing to 3 year olds who are the show's core audience, what not having seen the first 32 years of Sesame Street and never will because Elmo brings in far more money than Mr Hooper or Mr Snuffeluppagus staying in the closet...

“As always, Sesame Street is there to introduce basic academic building blocks and life lessons in a way that entertains and engages children as they embark on each new phase in their development...”

Hmmm, when will they teach the toddlers to avoid corporate crooks and credit cards the predatory banks try to shove down their throats?

Hmm, if Dr Phil got AIDS, would they then put an AIDS puppet on Sesame Street, in America?

And I do think he's sold out but that is capitalism? Everything and everyone is a commodity....

What got me are his weight loss bars. I mean, the man may be a psychologist, but he is no nutritionist.

10. Honestly, I've never seen his program
I have read a few pages of his weight loss book, but never an episode of his television program. That's one of the disadvantages of working and going to school. It saddens me that I've missed out on Maury and Dr. Phil over the last few years.

28. The program
If you haven't seen it--Don't. I honestly believed in Dr. Phil's intentions to help people once. :(

His "weight loss solution" thing amounts to this: "Don't put yourself in a position where food will be around. Modify your lifestyle. Eat healthier foods. And, btw, excercise."

Well duh, Dr. Phil!

31. I don't want to completely dismiss his abilities
Personally, I didn't need his help to achieve success. It might be easier for someone like myself, since I have better metabolism than older people. I just cut down on the fast food and caffeine beverages. From what I read of his book, it was targeted at those who were more overweight than myself. He does a lot of work with people who are 100 or 200 pounds overweight.

14. I quit watching over his position with the war and the way he
treated those women who dared to disagree with DimSon.

The only thing I ever liked about him was that he would ask the stupid question about "How's that working for you?" to get people to see the folly in their repetitive dysfunctional behavior. Aside from that, I've never liked his solutions, and i despise much of his parenting advice regarding babies. When it comes to babies, he's a selfish schmuck, IMO.

So, I got all I could get out of him and now I think he's worthless and a sell-out.

17. Even Oprah thinks he's a sell-out
She's openly criticized his decision to put his name all over those weight loss products he's been pushing lately. She doesn't feel it's ethical for him to be hawking vitamins and "energy" bars. It obviously isn't keeping him up at night.

Now if only she's apologize for giving California Candidate Groper(tm) all that free TV time... :-(

30. I liked Dr. Phil at first,
when he was on Oprah. Then I found out some stuff about him, like some former patients sued him for ethics violations, and he never had much success in private practice, except as a paid expert testifying in court. Also, I think he may have really screwed his old business partner.

32. I bet he's not even that good
It seems a shame to me that a guy with all of those faults becomes the most beloved shrink in america. I'm sure there's a lot out there that are much better.

Also, my friend accused Dr. Phil of having his PHD in physical education. We looked it up and, unfortunately, he really is a psyhcologist. It must've been Dr. Laura we were thinking of.

I don't get what anyone sees in him. To each their own I guess... I've got better things to do than to watch someone be rude to others.

Isn't there a People's Court knockoff called "Texas Justice" that features a rude Texas judge?

Damn, I'm so glad that I'm working again and don't have to watch daytime TV.
