Shocked! Shocked I Tell You!! John Daly found drunk outside a Hooters.
You just can't make this stuff up.

WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina (Ticker)—Former PGA golfer John Daly recently spent a night in jail after Winston-Salem police found him drunk outside a city restaurant, the Winston-Salem Journal reported Wednesday.

Lt. Tyrone Phelps told the newspaper that Daly was held at the Forsyth County Jail early Sunday morning to sober up.

According to the Winston-Salem Journal, paramedics went to a Hooters restaurant at 1 a.m. after receiving a report that Daly had passed out.

When police arrived, they found Daly intoxicated and unwilling to go to a hospital. He was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct.

1. I kinda feel sorry for the guy.
:( I hope he gets some help before he dies or hurts someone else.

2. Too true Heidi.
It never ceases to amaze me how athletes, celebrities and others who seemingly "have it all" fall victim to addictions. It goes to show that addictions are no respecter of position. I too hope he seeks help soon.

3. When I was a sportswriter, I was at a local 'skins game'-type tournament
with Daly, Fred Couples (who organized it and also co-designed the course where they played, San Juan Oaks GC), Craig Stadler and an Aussie whose name escapes me. This was in 1999, I think.

After they finished their rounds, the four pros put on a kids' clinic at the driving range. The road from the main road to the club kind of curved around the range, and if you hit it a bit to the left and could drive 350 yards, you could bounce one off the road.

Well, Daly started teeing up balls and hitting towards the road — while there were cars on it. He missed one by maybe 10 yards.

It was then and there that I decided the boy ain't quite right.

5. Dunno
It's been awhile. Seems like I might've seen him drinking a beer sometime that day or that weekend, but...

(Stadler and the Aussie were cool. Couples was a bit of an ass.)

:* back

6. It's disturbing to me to see Daly self destruct like this.
I've never met the guy, but he could pass for my identical twin.

Except for the fact that I hate golf.

7. A Hooters flack reports that he wasn't there officially representing Hooters
Since they do sponsor him.

But maybe they're reconsidering now.

I don't mind drunk and disorderly but as an ex-waiter I loathe people who try to stay past closing time at a restaurant.

8. His story has always troubled me.
I've seen too many lives brought down from alcohol. And it sucks to see one playing out in such a public way.
