"She (Jennifer Hudson) has a 5 octane voice"
That's what a commentator on MSNBC just said.

We need to get music back in the schools...

1. He meant that she's a gas!, Low-powered by still a gas!
He's got to be wrong about five octave, what he apparently meant. Two octave is great.

2. I've known a couple with a four octave range...
5 seems impossible.

6. Even if she could sing C above high C
(known as C7 - three octaves above middle C) that means she'd have to be able to sing C below the bass staff (C2 - out of the range of most men) to make that plausible.

The confusion is, usually if someone can sing 5 different C's (or Fs or Gs, or whatever) they would say that they have 5 octaves. However, this is not true. If you counted the octaves, it only comes out to four.

8. What was the late Minnie Riperton's range?
I thought she was 4+ octaves. She could belt 'em out....

11. She may have been...
There's a woman named Georgia Brown who holds the Guinness record for vocal range at 8.5 octaves; but what I've heard of her "singing" much of the whistle range just sounds like screaming...not particularly controlled. Also, I haven't heard much of her lower range.

Minnie had beautiful control in the whistle range, but even she couldn't sing any lyrics that high.

Check out Betty Wright! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qHma2DEBj8&feature=related

4. He probably was reading from a prompt...
...but if there was a typo, as I'm sure there must be oftentimes, it wouldn't take too much brain sweat to figure out what the word should have been. Ah well.

10. I don't know. Also, I wasn't dissing your thread by mentioning
the tragedy. I understand where you are coming from. The celebrities get so much exposure and everything that there is always some sort of blooper attached to them. It's sad when this happens to ANYBODY. I'm not a fan of her work, but I think she is a good person. And NO ONE deserves this. :(
