this is why i don't keep in touch with my dad or his side of the family
Edited on Fri Oct-24-08 11:52 AM by Ava
because they're a bunch assholes. for example, it is my birthday. i got the first email from one of them in months. basically the email said happy birthday, now here's a video i thought you'd like. the video is called "i'm voting democrat" and goes on to say that anyone who supports obama doesn't know about the issues any is only support him because
a: he's "cool"
b: he's black
c: because "hollywood celebrities say so"
and d: because they're elitist

and then it begins to list off stuff that obama they claim obama would do as president and all of it is first of all completely untrue and second of all offensive as hell.

yeah, happy fucking birthday to me from a complete asshole huh?

i'm trying to calm down before i respond. i probably shouldn't respond at all.

it isn't about them being republicans.. it's about them not respecting me or my ability to make my own political choices. it doesn't matter that i'm more informed on the issues than all of them combined.

edit: i found the video on youtube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPG25Wf0aa4

1. Aww, Ava, that sucks
And what they did is completely uncalled for. :( But, happy birthday to you, and I hope it's a wonderful day regardless of that. :hi:

2. it'd be one thing if it were actually a funny video
but no, it's meant to offend and it's uncalled for at any time but especially on my birthday. grrrrrrr!

thanks :pals:

3. You can't pick your relatives
but you can walk away from them.

It ISN'T about your politics. It's about ranking on you. You should waste no more of your time on them. You've got cool and important stuff to do instead.

5. i haven't seen my dad in almost two years
and that has nothing to do with politics. they're wrong on politics, but they're also wrong on a lot of other things. basically he's remarried and has a new family and now treats my brother and i like shit, so i walked away from it.

i've got a mom and stepdad who actually have always been there for me and who love me. that's all that matters.

6. Sounds like my aunt. She told me if I thought I was a democrat then
I obviously don't know what the party stands for. Like I just flipped a coin to decide which party I wanted to belong to.

Sorry, there are always those types out there. And happy birthday!

8. this would be an aunt too
i doubt my dad will send anything. she occasionally sends me a chain letter and sends me an email once a year on my birthday. that's all i hear from that side of the family, which is actually fine with me.

this just really really annoys me... and on my birthday? >_<

10. Happy Birthday!
I think you should hook them up with a link to politifact.com or something like that. If they are so smart and rational they will begin to figure it out.

And again.

Happy Birthday!

11. Chick, don't respond at all...
I understand this level of assholery, and their idea of a "birthday" greeting seems selfish and petulant.

If they can't give you proper birthday wishes, then they're not worth your time.

Happy Birthday, btw!

;)

13. Happy Birthday Ava.

I'm sorry that you received something from them on your birthday like that. Sometimes I wonder what goes through family members heads when they send something or say something that is divisive or hurtful especially on your birthday.

Don't let them upset you or ruin your day.

Just you standing in front of the camera holding the front page headline of a newspaper that reads OBAMA DEFEATS MCCAIN while laughing your ass off.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

18. When this election is over
people all across America will discover that the world will not collapse as they have been led to believe by the Right Wing.

It will take many years to get a lot of people away from the hate they've become accustomed to.

The first person to open dialog to resolve a problem is the adult in that situation. It may be that the other person never responds to that overture.

But look at it this way: Imagine how many Dads there are on DU who admire and respect you. I would never allow my relationship with my Daughter (she's 24) to deteriorate to this level. And she knows it.

20. I'm sorry, Ava
Hope your Birthday was a happy one, anyway.

I'm dealing with some more family stupidity of my own right now too. I just went off on a restaurant full of idiots watching Faux News this morning and my 83 year old mother is upset with me. Some day I hope have the patients and emotional fortitude to tell some of my tragic family stories based on political differences--political differences which ALWAYS come down to differences in intelligence, knowledge, and plain stupidity.

My condolences to you; I certainly can empathize.

As I tell myself, you can and should walk away from these people. Don't let these people have a part of your heart. It seems their intent is to stomp it. As DogTown said: You do indeed have cool and important stuff to do instead. Greater, better things to do.
