oh hell. I just remembered
that I have to spend Thanksgiving with my screwball, race-challenged in-laws.

This year should be fun. :P

4. they will be, but I won't.
I enjoy talking about religion, but I don't have much to add to family discussions that are centered on the literal truth of the idea of hell.

3. I can only take so much "end of the world" talk.
Chris and I will probably spend a lot of the day outside. :)

5. That's the beauty of me. I *AM* the screwball in the family.
I can't wait to spend the day alone, with just the company of a meatloaf and some football. Screw this turkey business. :P

10. I get along with my family and all.
But I'm not an overly social type. (No way...who would've guessed from the charm I display on DU? )

I hate days where you do things because it's expected. I don't do forced fun. I hate Super Bowl Sunday and New Year's Eve for the same reason. People make themselves have fun just because it's what every one else is doing. I have a good time often...but I don't schedule my fun. :)

12. Become the family ShutterThug.
Cut off just about every conversation with a photo opportunity for a new picture of Chris. Everybody wins. The sight of a camera tends to shut off most conversations, especially among us XX types. We live in fear of being caught with messy hair and our mouths poised open.

Alternatively: get a bunch of kiddie movies & shows on VCR/DVD and go off to watch Chris and the DVDs while Mrs.Uly chats with her folks. Bonus points for singing Doodle-Bop songs with the rugrat; loudly. Kid falls asleep? No problem, you pretend to doze too. They'll close doors and start tiptoeing around, - meanwhile, you whip out a paperback and get a little reading done.

Seriously, I'm sure you'll handle it just fine. It's only once a year.

I have a very dear friend who grew up around two racist jerks. She's a lovely, very emotionally and socially evolved person in spite of them. It really only takes one really great, really loving parent to set an individual on the right path and Chris has two of the best.

13. they've left me alone since I told them years ago I don't hunt deer.
That and the freelance career (such as it was) instantly made me The Weirdest Person In the House. I have to interact for about five minutes total for the day, then I'm good to hang out and make mental notes for the novel I'm going to write about these nutjobs one day. :D
