Operation Jobless Recovery Personal Body Count
- I was laid off in 2001. I was fortunate that it happened before 9/11 so I found work quickly.
- My mother was laid off in 2001 and 2002. She is now working
- My brother-in-law was laid off in 2002. He is not working
- My cousins were laid off in 2001 and 2002. They are not working in their fields.
- My father just got his 30 day layoff notice last week. He is only a few years from retirement. Hopefully he will find something. Fortunately he is in health insurance, so he should find something.

This sucks big time. At this point, my mother might just vote against Bush*

Later,
JM

2. Sounds familiar.
In 2000, I put my resume on Monster and had 473 viewings in two days. The phone was ringing off the hook. Two co-workers and I actually bid up a company by $15,000/year on a job offer. The phone was ringing 5 times a day with opportunities.

In 2001 when I was laid off, I had 2 hits in a week. No calls since. I get maybe a call a quarter from recruiters. Online I see maybe a posting a month for our area.

What industries are you looking into?

JM

4. underemployed
Making $75k less than what I averaged per year over the five years preceding 2001.

I love my job and had a lot of savings but it's going...going...going...almost gone, except for retirement funds. Very sad. Have never been in this position.

5. It sucks.
Laid off last June. Have been doing freelance/contract work ever since. Nothing steady. I do get calls, and go on interviews, and have received a few offers that went --poof!-- away. Yes, I'm cursed. I had a job offer for a long-term project and at the last minute, the client pulled the funding and went with another company. Another company gave me a verbal offer and then called back and said the position was on hold because senior management was reviewing all open reqs. I later heard that they laid off about 100 people.

I was a web content manager. Now I'm tinkering with the idea of going back to school to get a teaching credential (not many jobs there, either) or something else. I'm 32.

At least my husband is working! He was laid off last April and found one in August. He's a web UI designer.
