Good vibes needed, please.
My cousin had a baby boy yesterday. He weighed in at a decent 6 lbs., 10 ounces. He looked like a normal, healthy newborn. But after the delivery, he couldn't breathe. He couldn't cry, because everytime he tried he would stop breathing. His face turned all blue.

Come to find out, he was born without any bones in his esophagus. :(
I never heard of this before, and I don't know what happens now. My mom was talking to my cousin's husband's mom (who is a nurse) and she said that it is possible he could grow bones there (not sure how true this is).

Anyway, he is expected to be in the hospital for months (assuming they are able to keep him breathing). I am sure he has several surgeries ahead of him.

My sister was supposed to be the godmother. So, please, I am asking for some good vibes sent Little Angelo's way, and to the family. Thanks.

Yes, it's a bizarre thing. I think it's even more shocking b/c my cousin had a normal pregnancy. No signs of any trouble. It's sad.

8. What a nightmare.
I don't think there ARE bones in the esophagus, but
I did find THIS article:

http://www.childrenshospital.org/az/Site2191/mainpageS2191P0.html

Sounds like the typical congenital abnormalities
are correctable with emergency surgery.

You can help by being yourself.
Take the other kids out, if there
are any, so the immediate family
can rally around your cousins.

What a sad way to begin life. Let's hope he CAN grow those bones or whatever it is he needs to do. I'm going to look at PassingFair's link ...

12. Thank you.
I just talked to my mom, who works at the hospital (in an administrative capacity, she doesn't have any medical expertise) that Angelo was transported to.

She said that she was told that there are no bones in the esophagus. His esophagus wasn't moved properly which can cause breathing problems (which was the first sign he had) and digestion issues.

PassingFair posted a link above that details the exact cause and problem. It's an interesting read.

Thanks for your concern.

I'd never heard of this. It's amazing, if you think about it, how many things have to come together just perfectly while a fetus is developing.

44. Not yet.
Edited on Thu Oct-16-08 05:13 PM by bigwillq
He's still in ICU. They have been doing a lot of tests to see exactly what is wrong...looking for possible complications to other organs, but none of the tests results have come back in yet. We're still waiting.

Now they're saying it could be something with the larynx. I really have no idea. They said it's definitely an underdeveloped esophagus but it may not be what KC2 posted a link to above. We just don't know anything at this time.

My mom saw him before and she says he's beautiful. She said you would never know anything is wrong with him by looking at him. He is so much bigger than the other babies in ICU.

Thanks for your concern.
