Anyone here glad about Clear Channel's new policy?
I for one was able to listen to Led Zepplin, Rush, and others on my way to work today. There were a lot of commercials, but I didn't have to listen to one fart joke, one reference to "trim," one short-sighted opinion about how the government is unnecessary because the market will always correct itself. . .

1. I have been trying to stay clear of Clear Channel.
Though it sounds good. I don't like the limitations on freedom of speech.

2. No, it's censorship.
If you don't like fart jokes turn to a station that doesn't do fart jokes. The last thing we need is the government deciding what is and isn't appropriate. The FCC's threats and intimidation are responsible for Clear Channel's policy. The Department of Vice and Virtue are coming to a station near you.

3. There aren't any other channels that don't do fart jokes who play the kind
Edited on Fri Feb-27-04 12:06 PM by Iris
of music I like - that's the whole point.

I am uncomfortable with censorship, but why must everything appeal to the lowest common denominator?

And it's not as if anyone is censoring any original thoughts or ideas. I heard all the crap in junior high.

4. relying on the radio for music...
... is grossly unfulfilling. You have to utilize other options, like a CD player, or a good college radio station.

All of the big commercial stations play the same ten songs over and over again anyway.

5. If I had kids I'd be glad
Radio shows can get pretty raunchy.

7. Not a big fan of Clear Channel...
or of their censorship... or of fart jokes in the morning. But I think I'd rather have the fart jokes than the boring stuff they're replacing it with now.

Looks like I'll be listening to a lot more of my cds now.

8. Glad and ClearChannel are not two words I associate with each other
Until I hear they being broken up by the courts and our airwaves are returned to us.

9. Don't listen to CC stations
enough to worry with it.

I listen to:

- my local NPR station which features quite a lot of local and BBC programming.

- local classical station

- local student prog rock/reggae station WXDU. It's really fun, I almost never know what the student DJs are going to put together. :D

- One local big budget station that is not CC. I just like their mix of new music in the afternoons.

I hate, detest, loathe morning drive time radio. It insults the intelligence of even 3 year olds.

11. I'm against censorship...
I also believe that the radio listeners are not traditionally well served by the mega-corporations like Clear Channel that can and do own so many radio stations that they essentially dictate what gets played. That's why American radio today is so consistently bland and homogenous. And it's why I support public radio financially. So now Clear Channel is doing what they think is in their best interests and it all comes down to the bottom line: $$$$$. I have never heard Bubba the Love Sponge. I have listened to Howard Stern, and while I find a lot of his material adolescent and ignorant, he does have some redeeming qualties as well. His attitude towards free speech is pretty much on par with mine. I tuned in to him today (I'm in NYC), to see how he was reacting to the Clear Channel move, and he had a few good things to say about his recent banning in several radio markets. He pointed out, for instance, that the F.C.C., which has fined him many times before, is not behind the current Clear Channel action. He mentioned that the head of Clear Channel, currently facing the music in front of Congress, is now apologizing for airing him and vows not to do it again---while at the same time, Clear Channel has been airing him for ten years. The company is only turning tail and running now, that money is involved.

12. Lets see...
Clear Channel supported Pro-War demonstrations...and were/have been willing to shut down liberal voices before?

Yeah, I'm REAL Fucking happy.

"Who watches the Watchmen?"

Do you think you'll have a say in that question?

13. I'm against censorship even if the result is pleasurable
My tastes are not everybody's tastes, nor should they be. Who am I to say that people shouldn't hear fart jokes if they want to?

BTW, here in Chicago, when I listen to the radio, I listen to WXRT's Lynn Breymer in the morning. Never a fart joke and always great music.

14. Sorry I don't listen to American State Radio
I don't listen to the radio besides NPR anyway, because mainstream music sucks to begin with, but I'd stay way the hell away from Clear Channel even if I liked that stuff. It smacks of censorship and Big Brother, and is just one more reason to loathe them.

I'd say what else I thought of Clear Channel but it would probably involve naughty words that would offend Michael Powell.

15. This is not good.
I would love to live in a world where I can listen to Rush, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Black Sabbath etc. without dealing with all of the garbage. But I will not go through censorship of this sort to do it. It also irritates me that on their stations, they can openly support Bush or the wars he put us through and yet cannot express the opposite view point of being anti war or oppose Bush.
