Somebody stole my whole pile of firewood!
I went out to my carport this morning to get in my car, and apparently sometime between taking out the trash last night at ten and getting out the door this morning, somebody must have backed a vehicle up next to mine and made off with most of a winter's worth of firewood! There are three small pieces sitting there, the rest is gone.

I'd noticed last week that somebody'd lifted a few pieces, but it was unseasonably cold and I wasn't going to sweat it as long as it didn't become a problem. Well, apparently it became a problem. :eyes:

I don't have anyplace where I can lock it up, even assuming I could track more down affordably this close to heating season it'd probably just disappear again.

There goes my gas bill. :eyes:

1. Damn! @#$%&!
I understand that people are feeling desperate. But does that justify stealing and putting someone else in a desperate situation?

If that person really, truly needed wood for heat I wish they could have found a way to get help getting some. This really sucks. :(

3. If somebody'd asked I'd have shared
or loaded up the back of my car the next time I saw somebody giving some away, and brought them enough to last a few months.

I'm a single mom and a college student. I have a hard enough time without being stolen from.

2. tarp with bells attached
That's what I would do. Or maybe a motion sensor light. Maybe wood is cheaper where you are, but here it's almost $300 a cord for hardwood, seasoned. I'd protect it.

4. I rent, so I can't go putting lights up.
And noise wouldn't matter, I can't really hear anything down there, even when I'm awake (I have a hearing problem) and I'll sleep through anything. They probably backed a truck up next to my car, and I didn't hear a thing.

6. That is really horrible.
Did you report it? I mean, maybe that sounds stupid...but I think it should still be reported. I think that is fairly serious.

28. Yes, it's theft
You should call the police immediately if you haven't already. For all you know, you may be one of several people in your area who have had firewood stolen. The more people who report it, the better the chances the cops can track down who did it.

And bear in mind, this may not have been someone who stole out of despiration. It's just as likely it is someone who stole it to resell it. Think about it--if you are despirate and cold, are you going to take a truck and steal a full load of wood and run a greater risk of being caught in the act, or are you just going to steal the few pieces you need for the night, and hope the owner won't notice it? This kind of brazen theft indicates a profit motive, not temporary despiration.

And definitely consider solar-powered, motion sensor lights. If the landlord objects, tell them about the theft. In fact, you should probably let them know about it anyway, and they may offer to add safety lights themselves.

8. I gave away a bunch of fire wood last year.
A LOT of people called. I felt bad since so many are looking for some relief from their heating bill.

Sorry to hear about your loss.

13. yeah, they tested you, you dfidn't do anything, so they took it all
it's the give an inch, take a mile principle

it makes sense, you steal a not even a misdemeanor worth and if the cops come out and chew you out, you know to let that house alone, but if there is no peep heard, then you might as well take it all because there will be no consequences

i've had some freaking pepper plants dug up and stolen, worth all of $5 freaking bucks, what do you do?

if you don't sweat the small stuff, then they've tested you, they know it's safe to come back to your house and so it goes

you failed the test, your security is bad, and they know they can rip you off at will, so no use resupplying, i agree w. that much

20. Wow, that's good fortune at least...
Normally when things go missing, there's no prayer of finding out what happened or who did it. I hope you can recover the wood.

I, personally, am in the sorry position of having a fireplace in my apartment, but no place to keep firewood. I'd have to get a little bundle at a time, and it's really not cost effective that way. Now that I think about it, maybe I could clean out the storage closet off my balcony and stack a truckload of wood up in there...

Anyway, good luck bringing this to a favorable resolution....

23. You need to talk to the police about it.
Winters worth of firewood is probably in the level of grand theft. If you have someone that will testify, then fuck those stupid neighbors. If they still have it, which I'm sure they do, you get your shit back, they get a nice charge. It's a senseless theft that will take food from your mouth, from LK's mouth. Then, what do they steal from you next?

Fuck them.

26. It was about enough to fill one pickup bed. I have no idea what that's worth.
I got it all for free from a friend of the family who is a landscaper. He was losing the house and wanted somebody to take it, since his new place has no fireplace.

38. If it's over #50.00, it's considered a felony in most states.
Call a local firewood supplier and check the price for a pick-up truck load. That will give the police something to go on.

29. Call the property managers
Then, call the police. No matter who took it, or why, this is theft. The wood was worth at least several hundred dollars, I'm sure. If you know who did it, you need the police to take care of this, get you your wood (or some restitution) back, and get them charged with theft if you wish to press charges.

19. Thieves
I am so extremely sorry someone stole from you! My worst theft was someone stole groceries from the back of our open pickup. The only consolation is that they must have been even worse off than we were. Still - that really sucked stealing our food.

And someone stole your wood heat. You cannot survive a harsh winter without heat.

There are assholes who post among us. Cheating and stealing is just fine for some and the rest of us bear the consequences for them.

Try and post a link about that - not allowed.
