Might Relocate To Boston Area. Any Suggestions For Neighborhoods?
Edited on Fri Oct-10-08 09:06 AM by cryingshame
Just started looking.

It looks like Medford, Arlington?

Any suggestions to help get started would be appreciated.

Places to avoid?

Help?

1. Arlington!
Excellent town with a great progressive community. This is my hometown (well I grew up south of Boston but I've lived in Arlington since 2000), feel free to PM me with any specific questions.

2. What criteria?
Buying/renting?

City/suburb?

Near the ocean?

Public transportation?

3. Buying near ocean OR water. I'm single with no kids and don't ever want to see neighborhoods
torn down for McMansions ever again. Mainly, I love older, historical houses.

Moving out of the "Hamptons". What has been done here is criminal.

No longer do club scenes- more "cafe" type now. And classical concerts/lectures.

Am an outdoor person. Though mainly, I just want to live in a neighborhood again.

Smaller homes/yards are fine (less maintenance) as long as they're quiet. I can't exist without at least some space for a veggie garden.

Around Boston would be lovely.

I would be buying.

4. LYNN!
About 12 north of Boston on the coast (I live 3 blocks from the ocean and you can see the Boston skyline there). We have a wood reservation at the other end of the city. You can drive into Boston in about 20 mins. Next to Salem and Marblehead and buses into Boston and near the subway system (by car or bus).

It's a city, so we have nice neighborhoods and bad ones - you can have subrubia or live in the downtown area (not nice, but if you've been to a blue-collar city, you you what to expect).

14. Manchester by the Sea or Marblehead
Pricey but some really great places up in those two. And if you Love Sailing they are among the best anywhere.

18. spent the day tooling around real estate listings and that's one of the most promising
considering the cost of what similar goes for here, and the taxes it'd cost, Newburyport is a bargain.

Does it have any cultural happenings?

Neighborhood feel?

Thanks for responding... I'm going to check out your photos tonight.

I should post photos of some of the massive, bloated messes they've built around here. It's a crying shame.

25. Extremely tight neighborhood feel
You can usually spot someone you know each day. There's water events, a whale watch from the pier, a number of weekend festivals, arts theatres, half-decent nightlife too

9. Cambridge.
Just across the Charles from Boston. Much of it is fairly expensive, though.

Personally, I prefer the Plymouth area. You can catch a shuttle to the T and be in Boston in less than an hour.

22. More like all of it
You can occasionally get lucky, but you'll never find one of those by looking in the paper, online, etc.

10. First off: Kids or no kids? Price range? urban, suburban or more rural?
Edited on Fri Oct-10-08 11:56 AM by Marrah_G
Hmmm... read more of your posts above.

North Shore:

Salem, Gloucester, Rockport, Swampscott, Marblehead, Ipswich

South Shore:

Scituate, Marshfield, Cohassett, Quincy, Hull, Duxbury, Plymouth, Kingstown

South Coast:

(Much cheaper, 45 mins - 1 hour south of the city)

fall River, Swansea, Somerset, westport, newbedford, fairhaven.

(Salem would be my first choice, it is like stepping back in time, http://www.salemweb.com/guide/ the site even has webcams of the area)

19. Thanks for some more tips. And 1 hour into the city is a piece of cake. It takes me 2.5 hours
from here to get into Manhattan. And that's hair-pulling traffic for the first half hour.

26. To echo Marrah_G, some really nice spots south of
Boston on the South coast. Acushnet/Dartmouth/Fairhaven - all near New Bedford, but nicer, small-town feel. Freetown is another possibility. Light rail service expanding to this area soon, too. My family lives in this area - feel free to pm me if you want more info. Check out www.s-t.com for a link to the local newspaper.

32. Well then check out the south coast
Edited on Fri Oct-10-08 06:54 PM by Marrah_G
Lots of very old homes (18th/19th century), many quite beautiful (cheap if you want to restore). Right on the water (one of the oldest fishing ports in the country), they are extending the commuter rail there, and it is under going a revitalization with tech and biotech firms starting to settle there.

If you look on a map follow rt 24 south from Boston Traffic is not bad at all. The south coast runs from the Cape Cod bridges to Providence Rhode Island.

Do you have a job up here yet?

27. question about Quincy- I just checked houses/prices/locations. It seem unbelievably inexpensive
this isn't snark.... WHY is it so under-valued compared to other areas around Boston?

Is there a section with older/historic houses (1920 or earlier).

28. Try living in our apartment
$1530/mo.

There are plenty of cheap places here though. Why? Glut of housing (rental) and it's "not Boston."

There could also be some demographic reasons but I'll leave others to hash that out.

I pay just over £300/month on my mortgage (say $550) and my apartment is probably about the same floorspace.

30. To be fair, we don't pay for heat or electricity, and
we have off-street parking, a secure building, live within feet of the subway, have a dishwasher and a view of the ocean. Other 2 bedrooms in the city are much cheaper.

But we like it here. :)
