Unfuckingbelievable. My friend last night tried to tell me that Obama is the Antichrist.
We'd both had a few drinks and... I know she's republican but that sort of shocked the shit outta me. And I really like this woman, but. Wow. I tried to defend Obama (it was so ridiculous, I couldn't believe it) but I could tell it might get ugly, so I suggested we put politics aside. We did, and the rest of the night was fine.

But, PEOPLE! This is not a stupid woman. She's intelligent and kind. She read the email and believed it. I am now officially afraid for our country.

1. I am really afraid for Obama.
The fact that even the ones that we would think are intelligent can behave like this.

10. Me too. I watched the movie "Bobby" recently, about Bobby Kennedy.
Excellent movie, BTW. But it struck me that there is no cause worth dying for. You didn't say anything about assassination, but that's what your post made me think of: the real danger to Obama, and WHY?

Meh. Depressing.

30. A lot of Nazis were "intelligent," too.
Once greed, fear, and mob-thinking take over, even the smartest people get swept up in the hysteria. Individual intelligence is no antidote to group stupidity.

6. So true. But my friend isn't religious... she apparently thought
that this would be a persuasive argument. Goddamn, now I'm pissed. She must think I'm dumb as a stick, despite all the evidence to the contrary! :P

Kidding, sort of. We were drinking. I spend time with her and she's never brought it up before... it was the booze loosening her tongue and freeing her imagination. But, WHOA!

9. I really don't think this is as big as "our cause"
It's an ignorant e-mail being passed around by ignorant people. If she believes it, then ON SOME LEVEL, she's ignorant too. I retract that she isn't kind though. I'm sure she is. She's terribly misinformed though, and unwilling to listen to reason. So, I stand by my statement that she lacks intelligence, and I doubt that my statement is hurting the cause. As a matter of fact, I think that ignoring her and deciding to agree to disagree and not talk about it hurts our cause more.

I have a difficult time with one of my own right-winger friends and I often do the "agree to disagree" bit. He's a good friend, and I know he's a good person, but when it comes to Obama, he's ignorant and believes ignorant shit.

I'm sure your friend is an intelligent person, but it sound like when it comes to Obama, she's in the same boat. She's ignorant about him and believes ignorant shit. Bottom line, if she believes he's ACTUALLY the antichrist because some dumbass rw e-mail tells her so, then she's without a doubt ignorant about him (and christianity).

16. Holy shit - I JUST talked about this with a friend of mine.
She and I were raised fundie Baptist - and I told her that it's just a matter of time before we start hearing the evangelical right spreading the "Obama is the anti-Christ" bullshit. I almost sprayed coffee on my monitor when I saw your thread.

FWIW, I unfortunately know the Bible stuff pretty well - and as for the description of the anti-Christ....well....let's just say that Barack fits the description pretty damned good. So the evangelicals, the Rapture Ready folks, all have their panties in a wad over this.

Then again.....this same group was sure that Bill Clinton was the anti-Christ, and before that, JFK, so.... :banghead:

Hope you had a good time otherwise, Crimmie.....how are ya, hon? :loveya:

43. If I had more time I would look it up for you....but it's in both
the Old and New Testaments.

Basic description off the top of my head:

*Male
*Muslim descent
*Persuasive but deceptive words to the masses
*Will be well-received on a global scale
*Fluent in more than one language
*Will be a powerful leader in the world
*promising miracles while committing evil
*appears to want to save the world from something it's already endured
*his very character draws people to him, causing some to "worship" him (a "Christ-like" persona)
*will be seen as a "Savior"

But like I said upthread, there was a time when people thought JFK was the one; Bill Clinton; Vladmir Putin; and ironically enough, the Pope.

46. "Muslim descent" - Islam didn't exist
in the time Revelation was written.

(I just popped down into the Lounge to take a break from the rowdy bar upstairs).

AFAIK there is a Middle-East connection but that wouldn't be surprising as the events of the Bible take place there.

And besides I always thought that Shrub fitted the bill (a "Man of God" who doesn't go to church, 90% approval after 9/11 etc).

I believe that your friend is intelligent, and I believe that she is kind, but it seems that in matters of religion and politics she simply doesn't exercise rational judgment or critical thinking.

Additionally, it's clear that she was planning to vote Republican from the outset, and this is just another way for her to confirm the correctness of her decision to herself.

29. i don't get it
i remember the smear chain e-mails started during the clinton era, and i was thinking the more widespread they became, people would wise up, see them for the lies they are, and disregard them...

BUT for whatever reason, over the years they seem to get more and more traction, despite the wide availability for people to research the truth...This campaign, we have seen educated pundits, respected talking media heads, and even other politicians repeat over and over these lies in the chain e-mails...What I REALLY don't get is how many of them get swallowed up by like you said, intelligent, educated, and net-savvy people...Once upon a time the smears were only believed by people too ignorant to know better, but now it is the opposite -- and even worse, when i try to direct them to snopes or fightthesmears.com, what i get back from them is "what do you expect those sites to say? they are in the tank for obama!"

Seriously, thinking someone is the *antichrist* pretty much leaves you deserving mocking and derision for holding such an opinion.

Eventually, with enough mocking maybe they'll figure out what a stupid opinion that is.
