Saw an ad on HuffPost for the City University of New York and it reminded me that I always thought that its initials were a little dirty.

19. You think that's something? Wait for this:
Not an acronym, but an abbreviation. When I went to college, a required course in the Drama department (I wasn't in it, but it was a large department, and I knew a lot of people who were in it) was Analysis and Performance. I swear to god, the abbreviation was "anal-perf". People would just walk around and say it, like nothing was wrong with it - ANAL PERF?!?!?! I guess one could be generous and think it stood for "anal performance", but it always made me think "anal perforation", which scared the shit out of me.

3. When I started my first job,
I noticed the notation "FU" on many cases. After I realized it stood for "follow up," I decided some things were best not abbreviated.

"...Everything you do irritates me. And when you're not here, the things I know you're gonna do when you come in irritate me. You leave me little notes on my pillow. Told you 158 times I can't stand little notes on my pillow. "We're all out of cornflakes. F.U." Took me three hours to figure out F.U. was Felix Ungar! "

My personal favorite is "kumquat."

Also, for some reason, "uvula" has always sounded dirty to me.

8. FUC
Fleet Unit Commendation (Actually I made that up but) the navy is eat up with acronyms, so much so that they had to invent the DICNAVAB (Dictionary of Naval Abbreviations.) Never go to a staff meeting without your DICNAVAB (or DIC for short.) Oh that reminds of the real navy acronym - DIC (dependency indemnity compensation) which spouses whose spouses are killed in the military will receive. So if your husband dies the Navy will provide you with DIC.

I had fun with FUC, stating that one might receive a Fleet Unit Commendation with cluster or cluster FUC for short.

12. In Seattle we had for a few glorious months the SLUT
or South Lake Union Transit. Eventually people started selling t-shirts with the slogan "Ride the SLUT." The city finally couldn't take it any more and changed the official name to South Lake Union Streetcar. Killjoys.
