was that I get my news and information from stormfront. He never actually accused me of being a member of anything. Who knows, he might have had the mods not stepped in and deleted his comment.

In a conversation about genetic drift over on the science forum, I made a comment that there were documented people in ancient egypt who had red hair, so some scientists believe that some of the early settlers were at least partially european. Yet there sure as heck aren't any fair-skinned redheads left now. Implying that those genes were NOT the best ones in that case, so they disappeared out of the gene pool pretty quickly. Obviously fair-skinned people would not be able to farm and do the things needed to survive in a fertile but sunny area like that.

Unknown to me, various websites like stormfront had glommed onto that fact and tried to use it to say that white people should be allowed to take credit for all the nifty stuff that ancient egyptians did. And it's an obscure enough fact that it's hard to find via a google search. So this guy, obviously not understanding a word I said, just did a google search for 'ancient egypt red hair' and found those sites, and promptly accused me of getting my information from them.

You'd think he would have at least used a basic chain of thought to get from point A to point B, but the fact that I was pointing out that fair-skinned people were NOT the best fit to survive seemed to sail right by him. Also if stormfront says, "The sky is blue, and that's an indication that people with blue eyes are the highest on the evolutionary ladder.", the part one would argue against would not be "The sky is blue." It would be the other part. At least, that's how a reasonable person would argue. So I suppose maybe that guy would have gone the other way. :shrug:

Not to mention that I've got native american blood on my father's side and polish jewish ancestry on my mother's side. Only reason I exist was because my matenral family left europe in the early 1900s. Only thing stormfront would want from me is for me to be out of the gene pool. And the feeling is more than mutual.

at one point in time the town my great-grandpa was born in was technically part of Russia. It was long after he'd left, and I think it's back to being part of Poland now. But when he came to the states, they considered him to be a Russian citizen... despite never having set foot in any part of Russia. He was born in Poland and grew up in South Africa. Made for some biiiiiiig troubles. When my great-grandma married him, she actually LOST her citizenship because in the eyes of the government, she had married a Russian. And at the time that was not a politically expedient thing to do.

I do find it ironic that they missed out on being persecuted as jews, only to first move to South Africa, where they were the oppressors because their skin was lighter, then to have my great-grandpa move here and be persecuted for being Russian... even though he wasn't.

I've lived in Egypt for 3 years, in Alexandria.

This area, Northern (Lower) Egypt, has lots of blond and red-headed Egyptians with blue and green eyes.

My commute to work every day takes me thru a bunch of little farm villages, and I see quite a few citizens with that coloring. The trend is evidently continuing, since a lot of those light-colored citizens are children.

Sometimes I stop at a store run by a family with 2 teen-age daughters. The older girl, Asmaa, is olive-skinned and black-haired with brown eyes. Her younger sister Mona has lighter skin and startlingly blue eyes.

The city of Mansoura is so famous for this, it even gets mentioned on the city website:

The inhabitants are light-skinned and fair-haired (supposedly because Mansura's women are the most beautiful in Egypt and so were violated by crusaders who could not contain their lust!)...

The remark about the Crusaders is pretty funny. Some Egyptians claim the guilty parties were the soldiers of Napoleon. When he invaded Egypt in 1798, he left a bunch of French soldiers stranded in Egypt. According to legend, one of his Generals was so smitten with a gorgeous 16-year-old Egyptian girl that he converted to Islam because she refused to marry an infidel Christian.

In fact, foreigners have been tromping thru Egypt since time out of mind. Right here in Alexandria, you can see the remains of docks and seawalls that may date back nearly to the time of Homer. Pharos Island, a half-mile from Alexandria's coast, is mentioned in the Odyssey. Though it hasn't been an island for quite a few centuries.

According to what I've heard, these docks and walls were built by Greek traders long before Alexander The Great came thru and "founded" his city. Somewhat like Native Americans with Columbus, Egyptians like to point out that there was already a perfectly good Egyptian town named Rhakotis on the site. So Alexander didn't have to "found" anything.

There have been plenty of opportunities for Egyptians to mingle with foreigners. And as us humans tend to do wherever we find ourselves, they mingled with great enthusiasm. (Personally, I think that's one of our best traits.)

The Greeks ruled Egypt for 300 years, followed by the Romans, Byzantines, and Muslim Arabs/Ottoman Empire. After Napoleon the French came back to build and run the Suez Canal, then the British took over in 1882 and ran Egypt as a virtual colony until the 1950s.

Oh, and the Russians had "advisers" here for many years. So it's not unusual to run into fair-skinned women with traditional Egyptian names like Nadia or Valia. ;-)

78. Well, with transporation being what it is these days they're a little less cut off from the world

than they were back when it took either a trip across a huge desert, or a boat ride up a well-defended river to get there. And the time period I was referring to when there weren't any fair-skinned people left was before the Greeks and the Hyksos and the Romans and whatnot invaded. :) For quite a long time they were VERY isolationist. It wasn't until they thought about trying to build their own empires, first with trade to the south, then with conquest to the east and west, that they started mingling with outsiders.

Then Anhkenaton tried to do his own thing and the whole shebang fell apart. But that's an entirely different story. :)
