Had a friend that worked on the inside so I didn't have to stay up all night. I'll give you my run down of the last 2 years of owning the system.
First of all, no game system can stand on its own. The first 6 months of owning the Wii, I rented a few games here and there and they all sucked, minus a simple little game called Elebits and the awe inspiring Legend of Zelda. I never bought Elebits, but it was an intuitive little puzzle game. In those first few months, I found myself coming back to the little sports demo that came along with the Wii. I eventually did by Legend of Zelda about 3 months ago.
The Wii is genius in design, and because of such, I think only now are third party game companies understanding how to program the control scheme. The controls are amazing and fun. And now there are enough games to warrant buying a Wii to feel the full range of the remote/nunchuk scheme. For me, I love the fact I don't need to get a degree in a game controller in order to be a decent tennis player.
The graphics are yesterdays news. Buy a PS3 or Xbox if you want to live on the cutting edge. The Wii does support HD but to what level, I'm not sure. I have it hooked up to the HD side of my big screen. It looks nice enough. Oh, on a side note, the Wii is not a DVD player. It doesn't have dual functionality like other game systems. But, it does play gamecube games. And that is an incentive I did not anticipate as being so valuable. Gamecube games are on the cheap in most parts of the world. I've probably spent a total of 60 dollars on GC games and I have 10 or so. Keep in mind, I didn't have a GC, PS2, or Xbox to begin with so it's all new to me.
The sound is superb. 5.1 all the way. Very vibrant.
So what about the games, right? Wii games are never average in my experience. They are either mindboggling great or mindboggling shitty. Some of the best games come from previous game systems. Resident Evil 4, for example, was ported to the Wii and uses the remote/nunchuk to their full potential. Some new games shine, as well. Legend of Zelda is a fascinating story with exceptional game play as well. Rayman's Raving Rabbids (1 and 2)are great party games requiring 4 players in a lot of ridiculous interactivity. Oh, and the Lego series of movie games are more fun than you can possibly imagine. Another really neat feature is the ability to download old videogames from old systems. All in all, it's a very family friendly game system that has plenty of adult features in the games themselves. Just take into account that most of the good games are going to come from Nintendo. Get used to seeing Mario.
As for Wii Fit, itself, I love it and hate it all at once. It does get you out of the lounge chair and into the game. But some of the exercises are questionable. For instance, there's an exercise on breathing. Yup, you just stand there and breath. WOW! I'm already an ace. And there is alot of lag time between selecting the physical challenges. But, all in all, it's good physical fun. And working out is like a savings account - some is better than none at all.
So yeah, the Wii is worth it.
