RESOLVED: Youtube is the greatest invention of the past 500 years.
Arguing for: DUers whose username begins with one of the letters A-M.
Arguing against: DUers whose username begins with one of the letters N-Z.

DUers whose username begins with a digit or some Prince-like symbol are free to post their favorite youtube links. But if you lack the sense or foresight to come up with a name that starts with a letter, then your opinion can't be worth that much.

All right, let's do this thing.

This debate is sponsored by a grant from the temeah Foundation.

I don't see a doctorate available for any of those skillsets. Is he an actual doctor or is it merely a distraction from his lack of a doctorate in the mystic arts?

54. Let us go to the wiki...
Stephen Vincent Strange was born on November 18, 1930 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Eugene and Beverly Strange. A few months later, the Stranges move to a farm in Nebraska where Stephen is brought up alongside his brother Victor (who later became the guitarist for Rush) and sister April.

In adulthood, Stephen becomes an accomplished, but arrogant, surgeon until he suffers subtle, though profound, neurological damage in an automobile accident in 1963. His hands in particular are no longer able to make the precise, fine movements necessary for surgery, although their overall mobility remains. Unable to continue his profession and too proud to accept subordinate medical assignments, he becomes unemployed and destitute. He is reduced to being a derelict, performing shady medical procedures for the Detroit Red Wings. Learning of a hermit called the Ancient One who might possibly cure him, the desperate Strange ventures to the man's isolated Himalayan abode and asks him for aid. The Ancient One instead offers to take Strange on as an apprentice in the mystic arts. Strange refuses, but cannot leave immediately due to sweeps week.

While staying for the duration of the storm, Strange witnesses the Ancient One's apprentice, Anakin Skywalker, secretly attack the teacher with mystically summoned skeletons, which the old man easily dispels. Strange, his skepticism eroding, confronts Anakin about the treachery but Anakin responds with restraining spells that keep Strange from warning the Ancient One or attacking Anakin physically. Amazed by these displays of magic, alarmed by Anakin, but frustrated by the mystic restraints, Strange undergoes a change of heart. Deciding that the only way to stop Anakin is to learn magic himself in order to challenge Anakin on his terms, Strange accepts the Ancient One's offer. Pleased by Strange's acceptance for unselfish reasons, the Ancient One removes the mystic restraints, explaining that he is well aware of Anakin's treachery but prefers to keep Anakin close by in order to control and possibly change him. Strange studies magic under the Ancient One for seven years and returns to the United States in the 1970s to become a Jedi.

Or find the long lost Christmas Tapes?

<seriousmode on>
I was not really a big Youtube fan, until I started looking for old TV clips. And I mean OLD TV clips. Then I learned about the Christmas Tapes. It started innocently enough: before those programmes on TV that would show the bloopers, outtakes, cock ups, etc, the guys in VT would collect them and make a "Christmas Tape" for the staff, never intended for broadcast. They were uncensored... and the guys in VT (video editing) got enough together to make up a decent tape. Later years some of the TV personalities would get in the act too, even to the point where if some of them (Noel Edmonds being one) if they made a cock up, they usually said "Merry Christmas VT" afterwards, knowing full well it would probably make it on that years' Christmas tape. They even made some attempt at making a programme. The BBC bigwigs learned about it and banned the practice. But it didn't stop the guys at the Independent stations... they got to the point where they did parodies of their own shows (the aforementioned "Welcome to f*cking Bullseye") and their own ultra-low budget shows too... by then the BBC got back in the game with their own parody show but by then it was the end of the Christmas Tape...
<seriousmode off>

14. Greatness, when used as a measure of human works, ....
is a measure entirely comprised of the sum total of human reaction to that work. While it can be argued that since the majority of the human race has never had experience with youtube, and thus do not view it as great, I would propose that with any invention that has reached a sizable percentage of the living human population can have the views of that percentage of the population extrapolated out to the rest of the human race, living and dead. Given this presupposition, if we were to look at this subset of population, we would find that the viewing of youtube videos is the single biggest activity of a sizable majority of the group. Given that we can use this set of people to determine the likely views of the rest of the human race, we clearly find that the viewing of youtube videos is by far the biggest pastime in the history of the human race. Since the greatness of a human invention is sum total of reaction to that invention, and the biggest measure of human reaction is how much time is comprised of using that invention, youtube is clearly the greatest invention, not just of the last 500 years, but of the whole of human history.

Because it it the last bastion of true freedom of expression and the last way to get truth out to the general population as all traditional media outlets are compromised by the corporatists.
