States ask MillerCoors to pull energy drink

A caffine-infused alcoholic energy drink. That has to be one of the stupidest ideas in a long, long time. :eyes:

By EMILY FREDRIX, AP Business Writer

MILWAUKEE - Twenty-five states asked beverage maker MillerCoors LLC on Wednesday to abandon plans for a new caffeine-infused alcoholic energy drink.

Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal said in a statement that the Sparks Red drink is a "recipe for disaster" because adding caffeine to alcoholic beverages reduces drinkers' sense of intoxication.

Blumenthal, New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo and the other attorneys general say young drinkers are especially vulnerable because of their limited judgment and risky behaviors in driving and other activities. They urged MillerCoors to abandon plans for the product and said they would consider other steps — hinting at a potential lawsuit — if necessary.

MillerCoors spokesman Julian Green said the company still plans to release the drink on Oct. 1. He said the federal Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, or TTB, has approved all formulas and labeling for Sparks.

1. Over here Vodka & Red Bull is a popular drink.
Sort of like the rave generation meets pub culture.

But yeah, stimulants and depressants in one drink. Top banana.

5. Yeah that's a popular one. Bars here in Canada (or at least Newfoundland) aren't allowed to serve it
But there is a brand of energy drink called Rockstar that has an alcoholic version that's sold in our liquor stores. Ridiculous.

4. Ugh, I tried that shit once and couldn't get past the taste.
Like an orange popsicle made with frozen cat piss.

Alcoholic beverages should not taste like cheap candy. :puke:

12. RedHook's Double Black Stout was pretty damn good.

Beer with coffee in it. Beats an alcoholic energy drink all to Hell.
Too bad they don't make it anymore :evilfrown:

11. How ironic
Fact is that so called "energy drinks" - the regular versions - were originally marketed as hangover cures/things to drink at the end of the night before you drove home, which is why they contained not only sugar and caffeine, but also milk thistle extract, which cleanses the liver and would help get the alcohol out of your system.

I remember discussion of some states trying to ban them specifically for that reason. Now they're mixing the alcohol in with it? That can't possibly taste good. Especially coming from Miller/Coors, home of shitty mass produced swill erroneously labeled as "beer".
