My Father has died.

He had gone out for the evening, and as he came in the house, he collapsed.

He could not be resuscitated. He was 85.

I also lost my dad suddenly, in his sleep. People kept telling us how "lucky" we were that he didn't suffer- I said to my brother- "They keep sayin we're so lucky, did we win the Irish Sweepstakes?"

But this way you have no time to take it in or to say goodbye-- you're in shock, and every day you wake up and suddenly remember that it really happened, and all the grief floods back in.

But at least there was no lingering, no pain. My grandfather died like that, he'd been out for the evening, got up to go to bed and just dropped. It was sad for us but it's the way he would have liked to go.

My bond with my dad has increased significantly since he's also my boss - and I work with him every day. When I was younger, I found my dad to be stern and strict - but as I grow older, it's not the case. I think since he successfully fought cancer, he's been pretty mellow guy - and yes, he does have a temper from time to time. My mom and I measure it on a weekly basis to see if he had a 'good' or 'bad' week. This week has been good, and since Dad I share the same interest, poker, computers and life...

I don't know why I'm rambling on about my dad, but I'm really sorry to hear about your dad.
