Anybody have hypothyroidism?
I am going to the doc tomorrow. I have been on Weight Watchers for almost a year, and am still lingering around a 30 lb loss for about 4 months. One week, I will lose a pound, one I would gain. Thing is, I am exercising 4-5 times a week, and, according to my heart rate monitor, I am burning 700 calories. This is based on weight, and length of time exercising. I should be losing 2-3 pounds a week. In addition, I am having other physical symptoms that could be attributed to hypothyroidism.

I have been loathe to get tested, because I suppose I looked at it as making an excuse for myself, but with me eating as few calories and burning as many calories as I am, I am really thinking something might be wrong.

Any of you have any similar experience? Has treatment been effective?

I am not looking here for a diagnosis, just similar experiences.

Thanks! :)

1. Get to the doctor and NOW!
A cheap, simple blood test will tell you if you suffer from hypothyroidism.

Treatment is exceedingly inexpensive but EXTREMELY necessary.

Keep in mind that your weight gain, and lack of losing the amount of weight under your present regime may have nothing to do with your thyroid. There are many factors that affect weight gain.

Discuss all of this with your doctor.

3. Yep, I am headed out in the morning.
It is frustrating, really. I should lose another 50 lbs to be at a good weight for me, granted, that is about 20 lbs over the recommended weight for my height, but I am a very dense person. I don't have unrealistic expectations that I am going to fit back into a size 8. I would just like to be a 12. I am exercising like mad. I do spin bike, vigorous walks, shoot hoops, play my Wii, never for less than an hour.

It can be discouraging. I guess part of me hopes to have an easy explanation, and that with treatment, I can continue with my weight loss.

Thanks for your advice.

6. Just in general, what will happen to someone
with an untreated case of hypothyroidism? I've been avoiding the test forever and a day now.

2. I do.
I've been on a pill.
When I'm really trying, on the meds, I can lose weight fairly easily. Get tested. It's not difficult, and you will feel better knowing. A pill a day is much better than what could happen in the long run. I'm not sure exactly what that is, but my doctor makes it sound TERRIBLE. :)
Anyway, I'd do some research if I were you, and see what kind of diet would be best for your needs, etc. Good Luck!

4. I've been scouring the google.
I just want to not have to shop at Lane Bryant any more...LOL.

Really, I just want to feel better. When I was exercising before, I had all this energy. Now, I am lethargic and grumpy. I feel better than when I don't exercise, but I don't feel rested in the morning.

Good to know you are doing fine.

:D

5. I have some serious control issues.
I hate shopping at Lane Bryant, but I suck. So I guess I will keep doing it.

8. Hey, lack of control is how I put on the weight.
I was on Weight Watchers before, and lost 65 lbs. Then, gained every pound back. Now, I've lost 30, but I just am stagnant. What a pain!

I can't blame the big gain on my thyroid, because I went back to bad eating habits, but now that I am counting calories and exercising, and it's not working, something has to be going on. At least, I hope so. I hate to say I hope something is wrong with me, but it would explain a lot, and it's treatable.

In the meantime, Lane Bryant does have some decent clothes.

7. Get tested!
It's a simple blood test.
If you have hypothyroidism, it is important to get treated. Untreated hypothyroidism is one of the important causes of depression. Also, hypothyroidism affects cholestorol and blood pressure.
Optimum thyroid function really is important to your overall health, not only your weight.

9. Thx for the advice!
I just want to feel better, and not like I just ran a marathon when I get home from work. I am concerned about my weight because of the possible health implications, and a family history of heart disease. I hope I will be able to get an answer soon. If it isn't hypothyroidism, which would put a name to a lot of the symptoms I've been having, I don't know what it is.

It's aggravating to step on the scale in the mornings, and be up a pound from the day before when I continue to eat healthy and exercise.

Anyway, thanks for your helpful input.
