What I learned today: Seniors by and large do not program their voicemail.
I spent the morning and early afternoon at the Obama HQ making calls. When we call during the day we target seniors as they are more likely to be home. I would say that 80% of the answering machines I reached had that default flat computer voice saying: Hello. Please leave a message."

1. It is not just seniors
I have the canned message from the answering machine on ours as well. I have it that way for personal security reasons.

2. Oh!! I kind of pictured my grandmother. She can't figure out how to program hers.
She has my dad do it when he's visiting.

I didn't really think about security reasons.

3. For me it goes back to when I was a single female living alone
The male voice on my answering machine just seemed safer.

4. I do the same thing
for exactly the same reasons, KW.

I don't want people inferring information about my household from my answering machine.

5. A lot of that generation are still complete technophobes
My parents have owned VCR's since the early 80's, but I still have to program it for them. I gave them a computer, but they haven't really progressed much in their ability to use it. Ironically enough, they did manage to figure out the cell phone on their own. Still not sure how they managed that but still can't get the VCR to record the right programs.

Don't know where I got my love of technology, but it certainly was not genetic!
