My weird moment of the day.
I am work in the HR office of a company. Anyway, 2 Hasidic Jewish guys came in, asked for someone in charge of employees...I happened to walk up, and the receptionist pointed to me because it is my job.

They wouldn't look at me, or the receptionist, but they requested a list of Jewish employees. I said that I did not know the religious affiliation of anyone here, it was none of my business and that it would be illegal for me to ask. They just got really rude with me, asked me "what do you mean you don't know". At that point I turned on my bitch switch and said "There is no reason for me to know. This office has people of all backgrounds, and it is none of my business to know what those are and again, it would be illegal for me to ask even if I wanted to".

They got more angry and walked out. What the hell did they expect, an excel spreadsheet handed to them with the religious affiliations of the 200 fucking employees here?

GOD!

What the fuck were they doing. They were glancing back at the employees, as if they were trying to seperate Jew from Gentile.

8. Sounds to me potentially like some of Tim McVeigh's friends in costume
looking for names and lists.

5. Not to insult any religious group, but Hasidim can be a pain in the ass to deal with, just
like any really hardcore "fundamental" sect of any religion.

Their action in your company's lobby was absolutley out of bounds (as it would have been for ANY religious group), and you did indeed react appropriately.

You don't have to take that kind of bullying from ANYONE.

6. I am shocked they got past building security.
I sent the office of the building a strongly worded e-mail. It was just really inappropriate.

7. Yeah. Imagine if your Building Security people had been confronted by a group of
obviously Muslim people. Think THEY would have been allowed in?

Not, if you know me at all, that I'm the LEAST bit, dammit, I just lost the word because I'm tired and in pain, one of those people who dislike or are paranoid about Jews in general. But at the same time I realize that the Hassidim are extremist and just a general annoyance.

10. Thats what I was gonna say
Hassidic Jews are like fundie christians..I find it interesting that they wouldn't even LOOK at the women employees...
I expect they felt that your company was doing something offensive to the religion and were looking for a list for a personal agenda.."Look how evil ABC is they only employ x amount of jews".

Until recently I worked in an office with about 600 people, and I knew about 400 of them by sight. I have no idea whatsoever if any of them were Jewish, because--as you note--it's none of my damn business.

People are wacky sometimes, that's for sure.

I've known some guys for whom it would be a legitimate medical condition!

You might also try the "Unpronounceable Holiday" excuse. It's not like they're going to call you on it!
