20. ever have to inform some one of a loved one's death, I have.
I found that it is best to say asap "so & so's dead" I did it when I worked at the county coroner's office and I've had to do for too many friends and relatives. it's a real shitty job but spewing euphemisms is bs.

of course when it's someone I loathe like oh say former presidents let the clever euphemisms fly.

toward death itself. I guess in the past, kind and gentle euphemisms were used to keep the death of someone close less blunt, even one step from reality.

I believe "passed," "passed away" or "passed on" were used more often than any other phrase, though those who were more religious used some term that communicated that they were in another state of being, such as "in heaven" or "gone to a better place." Personally, I believe that "gone to heaven" is a term used with children, and not just for a human passing, but for a pet as well.

The smart alecky responses, though, being more colorful, I would think more people might use with either someone they don't care about very much, or even more odd, about a peer that they have known for a long time, and cared about--knowing the person well, they might use a term the person might have used if they were still alive.

Interestingly, most of the time, the clinical terms are very rarely used by people in reference to an actual person dying, but by those in the legal profession, doctors, coroners, or other medical personnel. One euphemism I didn't mention that is used by some in law enforcement or first responders to auto accidents or such, is VSA, which stands for Vital Signs Apparent. I guess when there is a horrific accident, some law enforcement and others who come to the scene first, must assess the damage and look for those who are dead and/or dying, or who have survived the accident. Some of them are not allowed to use the word "dead" until the body has been actually declared so. So they have the "VSA" response, which they use to communicate with other people on the scene, as in a body has "No VSA."

It is interesting how we treat death in our society--how we look at someone's death, close or otherwise, is usually a tangible way to look at how we handle our outlook on our own potential demise. Most of the time here in the U.S., we're ultimately afraid of dying, and prefer to look at it in cloaked terminology, without accepting it fully at all.
