Positive Thoughts Needed for My Mom
Edited on Fri Sep-05-08 09:12 AM by Liberalynn
My poor 78 year old Mom has a significant boat load of medical problems including Parkinson's, Leukemia, Borderline Diabetes, Hemolytic Anemia, etc.

She was doing amazingly well despite all of this. Depressed true and saying she's just so tired of it all and admitting that sometimes she just wants to give up, but basically she has hung in there like a survivor and kept trying to live life as best as she could by gardening, mowing (which she loves for some weird reason) etc.

Now she has pretty much quit eating, quit sleeping, quit mowing, etc.
She has a terrible pain in her left side.

Her oncologist believes her spleen maybe the problem, caused by the Chronic Leukemia. He's been trying since Wed to get approval from the insurance company and Medicare for a cat scan. Today she is feeling worse, the pain is worse.

He said he is going to try and push them to approve today. He said if not he may just have me take her straight to the ER, then approval won't be an issue, but he doesn't want to have to put her through the stress of the E.R, but he sure doesn't want her to go through the stress of another weekend feeling like this either. Her primary care office was basically no help, just passed the buck to the oncologist.

So please cross your fingers, send postive thoughts, or prayers, depending on your belief system that he's able to get the approval for her and that she's going to get some help and relief soon. Any and all positve thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

11. Thank you.
 The doctor called around lunch time. Said they had gotten permission from the insurance company finally but the quickest the hospital could get her an out patient appointment for the scan was Monday. He didn't want her to wait that long.

So he said take her to the ER. Luckily they were really nice there. They did the scan and her spleen isn't enlarged. She has a few gallstones, but they don't think that is whats causing the problem. They gave her some pain meds, and an IV and she started looking and acting much better. They released her and want us to schedule with a gastroenterologist, to see if its something with her stomach that is causing the pain, and her lack of appetitte. They also said don't hestitate to bring her back here if the pain comes back over the weekend.

Thanks again.

3. That's terrible. I'm so sorry.
Maybe she should go to the ER. If you are in significant pain, that's the place to be.

12. We did end up taking her there as the oconologist
Edited on Fri Sep-05-08 06:21 PM by Liberalynn
said he couldn't get her to the Cat Scan machine any sooner than Monday as an outpatient. So he said take her in and I will call ahead and let them know your coming. They were waiting for us when we got there.

The good news is the scan didn't show an enlarged spleen but now we are left wondering what is causing the pain and lack of appetitite. Well hopefully the stomach specialist might have some ideas.

Thanks again for your positive thoughts.

14. Thank you so much.
Now that we know it is not her spleen, hopefully we will find out what else it is causing her to feel so bad.

She seems to be doing better now that they gave her some pain treatment and hydrated her with an IV.

7. Good vibes and cyberhugs on their way.
I hope they find the source of the pain and deal with it. Maybe once your mom isn't hurting she'll regain her good spirits.

16. Thank you so much.
She does seem a bit better now and seems relieved it is not her spleen. Hopefully they will be able to discover the real cause soon, but at least for the moment she isn't in pain.

19. Her insurance finally did approve it
Edited on Fri Sep-05-08 06:41 PM by Liberalynn
but then the hospital couldn't get her in on as out patient on their one cat scan machine unitl Monday, so we ended up going to the ED.

They were very nice, treated the pain, hydrated her with an IV, and ran a bunch of blood tests.

All the tests came back negative including the cat scan, so now they want her to see another specialist, but at least for now, she's home, doing better and I got her to eat a small supper.
