I've been trying to find the words to say thank you
Edited on Sun Aug-31-08 03:08 PM by lizziegrace
none seem adequate. I went to bed a week ago today and had no idea how I was going to make it financially. Or emotionally for that matter. DUers have offered help in the past and I've thanked each one and politely declined the offers. This time, I really had no choice.

Then on Monday morning, I log on to DU and see the fundraising thread. I was grateful and mortified at the same time. Now, publicly, I had to accept help. Something I'd never done.

The gifts I received over the past week were more than dollars. They were good wishes, prayers and hope. I learned what gratitude truly means and how good people really are. We all want to make it on our own in this world, but the truth is, we NEED one another. I hope that anyone who needs help reaches out for it. It's uncomfortable, it's humbling and it's very foreign to most of us. But I can tell you that I have found joy and gratitude I've never known in accepting the help of friends and total strangers.

I will thank each of you individually and privately. But I want all of you to know how much you mean to me and Lelapin. We are rich beyond our wildest dreams and those riches have nothing to do with money.

P.S. Please keep this kicked. :)

3. Although I couldn't help right now...
I understand exactly how you feel, having gotten without asking a very generous donation to help me buy my meds a few months back from someone here (Deep13). Its really astonishing and humbling the generosity of basic strangers isn't it?

I'm so glad you got the help....

7. My dear lizzie...
I'm so glad I could help.

And if you need it in the future, I will step in once again...

We ARE family, all of us together...

And we do not abandon those we love.

to be able to help before my debit card and credit cards got lifted. Just about everything else involving money this weekend has been brought to a screeching halt, but I was able to help you.

Timing is EVERYTHING.

18. Being a Star Wars geek, the first thing I thought of was a Wookie proverb...
about how many vines growing together are far stronger than all of those vines individually. :)

When we support each other we make the whole world a better place.

Or like the aspen trees. They look like individual trees, but beneath the ground, they share one root system...

24. DUers are damn cool people.
A few years ago I was in a bad way. Major depression that had lasted for almost a year, bi polar disorder that hadn't been diagnosed so I was on no meds. I was down to a week and half to live where I was before I had to leave, and I had nowhere to go so I was facing homelessness for sure, in the dead of winter even.

A DUer tried to raise money for me through Paypal, but it caused some tension. I guess some people had gotten burned before doing that so they were hesitant to do so again, understandably. I was mega uncomfortable with the paypal thing and people giving me money at all (just like you were), so we scrapped the idea. The DUer in question then decided to just send me enough money to pay my rent for three months out of her pocket. It kept a roof over my head long enough to get my shit together, and literally saved my life, because I was suicidal before facing homelessness. It was one of those acts of kindness that comes out of the blue, and it's something I'll never forget.

I've seen DUers repeatedly do things like this for others. I know DU has it's warts and ugliness at times, but overall the people here are the best.

I'm sorry I wasn't able to help you personally myself. The end of the month is always really tight, and like a fool I splurged on some things early in the month, making matters worse. But I'm so glad to see that others were able to and that you're doing better.
