Need some good, descriptive lines for a pirate refuge

As some of you may remember, I'm running an ongoing D&D (Dungeons & Dragons) game and the players will be landing at a special pirate haven in tonight's game.

The island town is home to maybe 200-300 permanent residents, mostly "former" pirates & smugglers, but has another 1,000+ pirates there right now for a large gathering of pirates. (many races - humans of several races, hobgoblin, halfling, half-orc, orc, goblin being primary, with a smattering of gnolls, bugbears, half-elves, elves and dwarves)

What I'm looking for are descriptive terms/phrases I can use to describe this wretched hive of scum and villainy - smells, sights, sounds, etc - that would be a good fit for this sort of chaotic place.

Plenty of places to start up a buisiness. Most buisiness owners will sell everything for the price of ticket to anyplace else.
Lots of good people here, some are still living even.
