Hangover. Nausea. Vomiting. Help?
Edited on Fri Aug-29-08 09:11 AM by seawolf
I took some ibuprofen and got rid of the headache, but it's not doing anything for the nausea. I've got stuff I need to get done today (meeting with my academic adviser, going to my optometrist), and I can't do it if I'm having to worry about throwing up. Suggestions?

Christ, I hope it's just a hangover and not the beginning of a stomach flu...

2. Ginger ale...and once you can do it, something greasy
The fat counteracts the booze, or something like that. Trust me.

3. Hmm...
I've got a thing of Jif peanut butter in the kitchen cabinet. Think a spoonful or two of that would work?

8. A light, carbonated drink
I'm sure it's just me, but to get rid of most of my hangover symptoms I do a light work out and take a multivitamin. Your mileage may vary but it seems to help me quite a bit.

I'm going for Chinese food soon, since I overdid it last night myself.

Thank god I don't have to work.

10. If it is hangover it shouldn't last much past the morning
The nausea is caused by an overabundance of bile in the stomach from all the alcohol.. have yourself a good heave or three and you should be all better. If you aren't then it may not be the hangover.

13. Surefire hangover cure:
1. Build a working time machine

2. Go back to last night

3. Convince yourself to drink less.

Seriously though, getting puking hangover drunk on a weeknight isn't a very good idea. Take better care of yourself.

19. That works, and then it doesn't
1.- The hungover me goes back and convinces me not to drink.

2.- The sober me later resents missing all the fun, goes back and beats up hungover me to keep him from talking.

3.- The first me never gets the message, so me drinks too much again and gets hung over.

21. I'm not aware of any "cures" that work for everybody...
at least, anything short of prescription pharmaceuticals that my med school buddies used to use when they overdid.

From what I know of biology, a hangover is a combination of 3 factors:

1. Dehydration. Alcohol forces evaporation of a good portion of the body's fluid reserves. Oh, and it suppresses something called ADH (AntiDiureticHormone), aka vasopressin. So what doesn't evaporate gets eliminated another way!

2. Nervous System Shock. Alcohol is a depressant, and you're coming off of a mild overdose of it. Therefore your nerves are displaying a classic action/reaction phenomenon, and are now in a somewhat hypersensitive state.

3. Malnutrition. Pumping all of that liquid through your system has flushed away your mineral stores.

That in mind, what I personally do when I have a hangover: I drink as much water (not colas or sports drinks- just water) as I can stand.... I take a mild depressant (I like using children's benadryl so I can measure the dose easily)... and I take some good multi-vitamins (if possible, crushed so that they absorb more quickly). Aspirin are optional, but I sometimes add them to the regimen.

Actually, if I've been out drinking, I will often do the above regimen before going to bed, which helps me avoid them to begin with.

Best of luck!

22. My three best hangover cures, in order:
1. Go back to sleep for an hour or two.
2. Smoke some weed.
3. Eat a cheeseburger, or maybe something from a taqueria. Anything nice and greasy.

Couple spoonfuls of peanut butter, plus a couple extra hours sleep, and I haven't had any problems since.
