Work pet peeve...
Okay, I know this shouldn't upset me but...

It drives me NUTS when I get work early to get stuff done and all my coworkers who are already there (we work flex schedules so some people come in at 7:00 or 7:30) come into my cube just to say "You're here early!" Then they start chatting with me.

Yeah, I know I'm here early. I didn't accidentally come in early, neither do I need to be reminded of it because I'm not exactly happy about it. I have work to do. So no, I don't have time to chat either.

That is all.

Now I have to get back to work.

Thank you for letting me rant.

1. I hate when they turn on my overhead lights
I have been blessed in my last two jobs with and actual WINDOW, and tend to use that for LIGHT.

But some people become disturbed if you don't put on the flickering, headache-inducing fluorescent ceiling lights. The owner of my last company used to say "but it looks like you're not HERE." Okay, you see me working and hear me pounding away on my computer, why do you need something else to show my here-ness?

People stick their heads in the door "why are you sitting here in the dark?"
"I have two ginormous windows streaming in God's sunlight, and it looks DARK to you? It looks DARK?????"
And my reputation was that when my lights were off I was "cranky" - imagine that.

And I agree with you grace - if you're there early, you're there early to WORK

2. I'm the same way. I LOATHE fluorescent ceiling lights. I don't have a window anywhere
near me so I brought in some lamps and I use those (with warm, non-flickering compact fluorescent bulbs). I even had our maintenance guys take out a couple of the fluorescent bulbs over my cube.

I would much rather have natural sunlight though. At home I don't turn on lights until I absolutely have to do it, because at work all week I never see daylight.

They really ask you "why are you sitting here in the dark"? What a stupid thing to ask! I'm pretty sure if you wanted a light on, you'd know how to flip the switch.

3. people touching my monitor.
point - don't touch - i don't want your grubby fingerprints on my stuff.

also - people who leave garbage on my desk or write on my notepad (we hotel our cubes)

lastly - people who have no manners and don't ask for things politely.

5. Yikes.
I got a million of 'em...most of them specific to my own anger issues and other people's obvious personal and philosophical shortcomings.

But the next person that throws his 3/4 full big gulp in my fucking trashcan gets his lungs ripped out!!!!!

6. So far I'm agreeing with all of these. Geez, I must be easily annoyed.
So long as I'm on the topic, it's really annoying when people give me files that are a complete mess. I'm no neat-freak, and I can be as disorganized as the next person. But my design files are usually very organized unless I'm in a huge hurry. Even then, I always stop to clean them up before I pass them on to someone else.

I got a photoshop file yesterday that had AT LEAST 90 layers. None were named, half were empty, nothing was grouped in any logical fashion. I had to spend 25 minutes just cleaning up the file before I could even work with it. And then, there were a few drop shadows and layer effects that *were* flattened. The few things that needed to be left as layers were flattened. Grrrrrr...

7. people who put really smelly trash in their desk trashcan instead of in the break room
or cafeteria. I really don't want to smell the raw onion from your salad or the salsa from your breakfast burrito all day long.

and do not even think about bringing out your burned popcorn

8. Stupid questions. Which isn't fair really... I guess...
cause some people just don't know where to look for answers, but still.

Those are the questions like, "Which way does the paper go in?" (All the machines in this office have indicators showing this.)

Or, "How do I make a call?" (Maybe it's me, but I *thought* dialing 9 was a pretty standard thing, soooo what say we give that a shot, eh partner? Oh and yes, to dial long distance from here, you still do have to use the 1... yes, I know... who would have thought?)

Others though, they're questions for which there really is just no excuse at all. Like, "Where's the fax machine?"

Really?

Are you really unable to tell the copier from the fax?

REALLY?!

:headdesk:

9. Here's one that really gets under my skin...
...co-workers who absolutely coat their workspaces with pictures of children. A few near your monitor would be enough; the rest of us don't need to see 592 pictures of your kids. They're not that engrossing, they're not that cute.

However, to this particular co-worker's credit, at least she's never brought her kids to work. There's something I find absolutely intolerable. In fact, my favorite co-worker actually rats out others for doing this. It's an office, not a daycare center.

14. OMG I HATE THAT! When I moved into my current cube, I came in over the weekend
to rearrange so that I could have as much privacy as possible. Neither my back nor my monitor faces the door, and for some reason it really causes people to stop and knock before they enter, even though they just waltz into everyone else's cube.
