9. Well, I've been within 18 inches of a grizzly, and it wasn't in a zoo.

Camping in Yellowstone about 30 years ago.

Grizzlies come through the campground every night looking for easy food. Every night about dusk, the rangers drive through the campground repeatedly making PA announcements to make sure you don't have any food or anything that smells like food (toothpaste, etc) in your tent.

Then about 2 a.m. bears come through. You hear them banging on the bearproof trash cans and rummaging around. One was right outside my tent for a couple minutes. I just laid still and quiet, and it moved on.

By now, they probably have bear-proof storage lockers at the campsites but back then, you just put everything in your car and closed it up tight.
