The expanding definition of a Martini has me ticked off

Do you remember the good old days when one could go into a bar and order
a Martini- maybe specify the type of gin and that was good enough?

Now to get the classic Martini, the only kind that has earned the name,
you must specify every paramenter of the drink. There is even such a thing as a Martini menu that includes drinks with things like cranberry juice and apple liquror! What kind of twisted minds come up with abominations like this?

I'm all for people dreaming up any kind of drink that makes them happy, but I wish they would stop calling them Martinis

I think young people coming up like the idea of drinking, because its "adult" behavior. But they really don't particularly like alcohol. So drinks are getting turned into things that bury the taste of the alcohol.

Someone mentioned chocolate martinis. My SIL loves them. She says they taste just like chocolate milk. I say, bad idea - get drunk off your a$$ without knowing it.

They've invaded and perverted martinis because that's one of the "adult" drinks they heard about when they were young, or heard mentioned in Bond films. But, eewww the taste! Give us something tasty we can call a martini, and let us pretend to be suave.


I personally have never had a martini or any sort - they don't have enough whiskey in them. :hi:

Booze that tastes like booze is definitely an acquired taste.

My first taste of hard liquor was the southern standby, Bourbon and branch.
(folksy slang term - Branch="Branch water". A branch is a small stream. It's where some folks got their drinking water in the olden days.)
Anyway, it tasted like medicine. Eventually I got used to it and enjoyed the taste as well as the effect. My first taste of Scotch was the same. Yuck. I've been a Scotch drinker for 30+ years and now Bourbon tastes too sweet to me.

My son-in-law drinks Scotch and lemonade.

At least with martinis, you get options. With sammiches, you get whatever the restaurant owner thinks are the ingredients. Outside NYC, this can range all over the map.

The only ingredients in a martini are gin and (maybe) vermouth. Period. Oh, I forgot the olive. But that's it.

I understand that vodka martinis have gained legitimacy, but the true drinker does gin, preferrably Bombay Sapphire.
