Kitty quick sketch of the day #2
Obie snoozin'. Done on the Cintiq 21UX

What's a Cintiq? http://www.wacom.com/cintiq/

See one in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLEubvE5ZQ4&feature=related (might want to turn down the speakers; the music is kind of annoying).

It's not as easy as drawing on paper because of the slick surface and pen lag, but I'll get used to it one of these days!

3. O.K., so let me get this straight....
...you're trying to kill us with cuteness. Well, you'll probably win...:-)

Oh, and here's for kitty sketch #2...:loveya:

17. Lol! Sometimes I think that Oberon is trying to kill me with his cuteness
That's pretty much his standard sleeping pose, and his standard "I'm waiting for you" pose is this one:

which I'll have to sketch some day too. He's better at holding still than the other two anyway!

21. Lol! I almost named him that. Gandalf was another choice
but I settled on Oberon because it was a little more unusual. What's shocking is that most vets and their staff don't know where the name comes from. Not only that; they've never even heard of "A Midsummer Night's Dream"!

4. I don't have Cintiq, but I have a Nintendo DS...
That can run the homebrew program called Colors!

Here's a gallery of images, obviously not mine, its hard to draw with, but I'm practicing.

The cool thing is that you can see a playback of the strokes people used to make the pictures.

7. Hey, those are really cool! The playback feature is great
do you do it with a pen tablet? Does it use Photoshop, or it's own program?

One of the artists is using the same quick sketch technique that I do: http://colors.brombra.net/details/1207-gate_by_sketchling.php

I don't know about doing a detailed piece using these tools. I'm still pretty old school and like having a hard copy canvas or panel after I finish a painting, but I'm starting to warm up to the idea of rough concepting digitally.

8. No, it uses a Nintendo DS...
Edited on Sat Aug-23-08 01:21 AM by Solon

It has a touch screen and stylus, its all self contained, you put the program on a microSD card that is run by the DS, it saves the picture in .png format, and then you send it wherever you like after that. Its pretty nifty because you can draw on the go!

9. Wow, that screen looks pretty small. I'm impressed that so many

artists have done such an incredible job with something so little. It looks like there are two screens there. Does one hold the "canvas" while you select the colors and brushes from the other?

10. Actually, the way the interface works is simplicity...
First off, the lower screen is the touch screen, and it is pressure sensitive. The Upper screen usually just displays a legend for the buttons on the DS and what their functions are for, You have eyedropper, zoom in, zoom out, etc. assigned to each button. The buttons are repeated on both sides, for left and right handed people.

The "shoulder" buttons, that are basically behind and below the top screen you hold down, one or the other, to bring up color and paint brush selection and size. You also have settings for pressure sensitivity, like whether, if you push down harder on the screen, does it make the line you draw darker, or does it make the paintbrush thicker, or both or neither. It doesn't have a lot of options, but it allows for a lot of creativity with what you work with. I like it for its simplicity in this.

The screen is small, hence the zoom in and out function, if you saw the polar bear picture, there is a lot of detail in it, I was really impressed by that one!

12. Man, the thing IS tiny! I found this too:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C12oQalay9Q&feature=related

Cool that you can do animation with it too. I'm way too blind for something that tiny, but if they make a bigger one some day I'd consider it.

Yeah, the polar bear painting was just nuts. I save that sort of detail for oils or acrylics; you've got nothing tangible to sell after so much work if it's just digital. Even now most illustrators will only start a painting in Photoshop and painter, then print it out as a giclee and finish the details in oil. That way it still has that hand created feel to it, and there's something to actually hang on the wall after all the effort. Though I know that most people who pick up something like that probably aren't illustrating for a living. It's a great way for young people to learn, though.

13. Yeah, a lot of people do it for fun...
Hell, I'm going to try to learn the program so that I can make sig pics and stuff a little better, also trying to brush up on my sketching skills that I let atrophy over the years.

You are one talented lady Lorien. This is my first real exposure to Cintiq, and I must say you have done it justice. Bravo!:applause:

Plus I dig Oberon. One of these days I'll get me a coon cat!
