So, Seattle area folks, suppose I take a job in Renton.
There's this job there that I qualify for. I am considering applying for it. It would be a promotion within the company.

So, if I were to work in Renton, give me a few tips on where to look to live. I don't need anything too hoidy-toidy, but clean, safe and convenient are good things. I know the Seattle area a little bit, but I do prefer living fairly close to work, just to have a short commute.

Thanks! :)

1. Des Moines is nice.
It's on the sound and not too far from Renton. Burien and Normandy Park are also acceptable choices as they are 405 adjacent. The further inland you get, though, the less palatable the area becomes. And as much as I never thought I'd say this, parts of Sea-Tac are okay.

3. If I move, you know we'll be leading parallel lives.
;)

Thanks for the advice.

4. It's weird, innit?
The only difference is that you will be employed!

2. I've been here 2 1/2 years and haven't been to Renton once

I'm no help at all. Doesn't SeattleGirl work in Renton now?

Try X-posting in the Washington group.

5. Elitist.
I should x-post in WA. I might do that if the lounge disappoints me.

7. I wouldn't recommend living in Renton
Edited on Fri Aug-22-08 04:28 PM by LisaM
you could live in the south end of Seattle and commute there pretty easily. Or, I guess it depends on what you like to do. For sporting events, which of course are limited to baseball and football, livng in Renton is ok. And it's not far from the airport. It'd be a pain for you to get downtown very often though.

8. Which way does traffic flow at rush hour?
I usually go into work early and leave fairly early, so it's not usually a big issue, but if I can go opposite of traffic, that would be nice.

I would like to get downtown occasionally. I'm about 10-15 miles from downtown here, and when there isn't much traffic it's an easy drive.

Thanks!

9. It goes in and out of Seattle
that is, people work in Seattle and commute to the north and south ends, and to the eastside, and to the ferries (west). I think that you can get to sports things from Renton on the train. There's a commuter train from Renton, but I don't know if it runs during non-commute hours.

If you were coming into town after work you'd be going the opposite of the rush hour traffic.

10. Interesting. I suppose that makes sense.
That's the way it is here. Suburbanites head into town in the morning, out in the pm.

Now, if you could just cut those housing prices in 1/2...

11. They're totally insane - driven up in some part by Californians moving here
in the 90s - but Seattle salaries didn't really go up commensurately - though the LARGE COMPANY to the east of downtown has some wealthy employees.

Prices are better than they were, and I think that they'll drop again in October and January.
