Hi-Def t.v. - some comments and questions.
so our oldster just went blank white and silent last weekend - a bit of a harsh surprise as usually our t.v.'s last forever, but that's the way it goes.

I was hoping to look to get it fixed, but no, hubby goes out and buys a Hi-Def. It's nice and all but taking advantage of all of it's features is kinda..... expensive, to say the least.

The box itself is another 350$ investment - this will give us HD for regular channels like CBS, CBC, etc., - 10 of them in a 'free' package that comes with the box. Additional channels like Nat'l Geo and such come at 9$ a month each. hmmmmm. another option for the box is a memory box which also gives you 120 hours to record on. 550$ I think.

Then there is the DVD thing. That would take about as much investment in buying a PS3 or what else there is available to play the what is right now a very limited selection at Blockbuster for rent.

so the add ons will come up to almost as much, or more, as the tv itself.

but I when I watch 'hi def' feeds, like the Olympics, etc., the picture is damn good! it's crispy flat juicy and amazing without any add on expenses.
what's up with that? like how many times better can a picture be to validate spending so much extra money for it?

1. You'll never justify it
in terms of "am I getting my money's worth?" Truth is, you can watch the latest episode of Scrubs on a secondhand 19" television for about 10 bucks - and you'll enjoy the show just as much. But, I digress.

The question is "Do you enjoy it?" and "Can you afford it?"

If both questions are yes, don't sweat it. Just enjoy the Olympics in all its 1080p glory.

Also - if you buy the PS3, it will be so much more than the sum of its parts. Meaning that, even now, it's a blu-ray player, game console, media server, etc... there's going to be even more features rolled out that people will enjoy. It is truly a "Home Entertainment" console.

2. I could go for the Ps3 as I'm a gamer
maybe.... that might be in the cards one day.
but the HD box, mmmm, we talked about it more this evening and came out more unimpressed with what is the offer for those bucks.

besides, we're getting older and our eyes aren't what they used to anyway.

4. didn't get nothing but the tv yet.
cant' get Direct - I'm in Canada.

The cable company offers a HDbox add-on that shows some channels in hi-def (10 'free' but they are the reg. ones like CBS, CBC, NBC, etc.,), I was hoping there would be some good movie channels or something to pick from.
