1. Windows Movie Maker should let you run the music while the vid track...

... sits on the single picture. You could add opening and closing titles, too. Last step is to save as a .wmv file and upload to youtube (I think they accept wmv but it's been a while since I've checked),

Not a steep learning curve for WMM, either.

2. Youtube will take just about any format that can be converted to .flv
including .flv files. :)

3. I've been wanting to figure out another aspect...
...and that is how to get music from cassette to a digital file, so I can do what the OP wants to do. I have homemade cassette recordings of jazz jam sessions that people have been asking me to convert to youtube. Stills and music on cassette, and not a technical brain at all.

6. To digitize music, you just need a player, a computer and some software.
and a cable (1/8" to 1/8" - basically a headphone jack on each end)

connect the player to the computer: use the cable to connect from the 'headphones' jack of the player to the 'mic' or 'line in' on your computer.

use audio software (google: audacity for free software) to record the tape to the computer.

save the file, name it, etc.
