25. Not the best SY show ever? But still great...
...They're simply one of the best. I haven't seen them often in recent years: Central Park in the early 21st century, and then I have to go back to the early '90s. So I don't keep up with their no-doubt evolving set-lists, but was well pleased that they hit "Daydream Nation" somewhat heavily on July 4.

62. I would have LOVED to see Men At Work back in the day.
They're highly underrated because they get grouped in with all the crap that was out at the same time. Colin Hay is an amazing songwriter (for those who doubt me, seek out the solo acoustic version of "Overkill").

71. Thanks! They were terrific!
Maybe a one hit wonder, "Down Under," but they were very good. I'd go back to see them, anytime, and you're entirely right about Colin Hay. I will look this up, glad to know his performances are available on-line... Thank you. :hi:

As for Peter, Paul and Mary, my mother saw them back in the '60s, when they were in their heyday. She belonged to some civic organization that used to provide ushers for performances, and she was one of them. I saw them on a reunion tour, brought my grandmother, who liked them a lot, LOL. :D.

One cool thing that I did find out is that Paul is married to the current chaplin at my boarding school, so they've performed there. :-)

8. Megadeth or Iron Maiden.
Both within the last year. I don't remember...wait...Maiden was in February and Megadeth was in May or June.

So Megadeth it is.

Ask me again in a couple of weeks and it'll be Judas Priest.

Ask me around Christmas and by then it'll be Metallica.

(I like metal concerts. Duh.)

They kicked ass as usual.
Their new(ish) guitar player is very, VERY good. Festival floor seating at the Long Beach Arena, so I didn't have to sit a mile away. For me, Children Of Bodom kinda stole the show. Probably because I'd never seen them before. I've seen Megadeth about half a dozen times.

I really like the undercard lately. Like the next show on my schedule: Priest, Sabbath, Motorhead, Testament. I've seen Priest 8 or 9 or 10 times. I saw "Heaven And Hell" recently at the Forum. But I haven't seen Testament in 20 or so years, and I've never seen Motorhead. I'm thinking that from my perspective, Motorhead's gonna be the most memorable.

As for Metallica in December, I've seen them MANY times! I'm more excited to see Lamb Of God, and my current favorite, a little outfit called The Sword.

Rock on. :headbang:

99. I can understand your opinion (many share it) but I dig
Nostradamus myself.

For one thing Priest finally showed some sack and just ignored trying to fit in with what is current. Sometimes that gives them brilliant results (Painkiller) and sometimes, well, not so much (Turbo).

In the interest of full disclosure, I do actually dig the hell out of Turbo, or at least most of it. Well, pretty much Turbo Lover, Locked In and then side two--I think Hot for Love should probably be in Priest's top ten for outstanding guitar work. Of course KK took the solo on that one, so they buried the track on side two and didn't bother to play it live. In fact that has always been a major pet peeve of mine with my all time favorite band--you generally know which songs they are going to play on touor even before the album comes out. You are going to get their five or six "almost hits," every song from the new album that Glenn solos on, and then one nugget from the vault that Glenn solos on. So if you really want to hear something from the late 70s, but KK took the lead on it, well, you're pretty much fucked, they ain't playing it.

Until now. They've 86'ed Living After Midnight, and are pulling out stuff from Sin After Sin Including Dissident Aggressor, a song from 1977 that KK solos on--not to mention an unsung highlight from that album!

They had better put out a DVD from this tour, that's all I can say--otherwise I might cry. :)

52. Yep, it was awesome. You should see them if they come around again.
In between songs, Brendon Small did the voices of Nathan, Skwisgaar and Pickles with the lights off.

There were also new Metalocalypse videos.

They played the Duncan Hills Coffee Jingle, which was the icing on the cake.

It was packed. I was surprised by how many people were there. I counted no less than three different mosh pits.

Good times.

56. I am so incredibly jealous. Mike Keneally and Bryan Beller are GODS.
I couldn't go because a) I had a gig, or b) I had limited funds. Probably both.

Considering the large taper following Keneally has, I'm surprised that only one recording from the tour has made the rounds so far.

59. They were both excellent at the show.
Played all the parts and solos perfectly. Didn't miss a note.

And I've been a musician for 18 years, so I was definitely listening for mistakes.

The one complaint I had - and this was really minor - was early on, the mid-range levels were too low. Some of the solos early on sounded a bit muddy.

But they fixed the problem fairly quickly and the only people who seemed to notice were other musicians.

The funny thing was that none of them had long hair except Gene Hoglan (also excellent, btw). It looked kind of funny at a metal concert.

61. Have you read Keneally's Dethklok tour blog?
It's on his MySpace page. He frequently talks about the sonic difficulties of the different venues they played on the tour, and some of the incompetent monitor mixers they had.

77. I did just now. This show was at the Marquee Theater in Tempe.
Kenneally wrote about the monitor problems.

"Soundcheck reveals some issues – Brendon is using in-ear monitors, and depending on where he stands onstage, raging static goes racing through his head. One hopes this will be worked out somehow, and apart from this problem things are going pretty smooth. This will change...

...Big dramatic reveal clumsily foreshadowed earlier: not only are Brendon's monitor issues not resolved during the Tempe gig, Beller has inherited a few technical nilbogs* of his own. Throughout the gig, Gene from his drummer's position sadly witnesses the physical manifestations of the psychic pain of Brendon and Bryan as they suffer through their many maladies, whilst I at stage right exist in a crystal bubble of Keneallyesque obliviousness to all of the above and have a fine old night, just splendid. Probably just as well I had no idea of their misery, it wouldn't have helped the performance any. I come off stage all "that as a great one!" and immediately taken aback by the spontaneous and vociferous tales of woe, jeez I'm sorry guys, had no idea. I had a hell of a night actually, gosh. Yep, that's how it went. Verrrr-batim."

So Small and Beller thought it sucked, Kenneally thought it was great.

That's funny, because from where I was in the audience, it was great except for that one glitch.

So the truth is always somewhere in between. :-)

102. I hate to gloat (of course!) but it really was an exceptional week.
Plus, we got in a couple of days at the beach!

CSN hasn't lost ANYTHING vocally over the years. The harmonies were still perfect, and the songs are still classics. The opening chords of "Southern Cross" literally made the hair on my neck stand up. Stills did "For What It's Worth" on his Strat, and the call-and-response between him and the crowd on the chorus ("I think it's time we STOP" and the crowd responds "HEY!") was electric.

I'm not a big Cheap Trick fan, but they were excellent.

Heart. Damn. Ann Wilson's voice is one of the most incredible instruments I've ever heard. Nancy is a surprisingly good guitarist, as she showed on the solo long acoustic intro to "Magic Man."

JOURNEY!!!!! Holy shit. The new guy, Arnel Pineda, was amazing. Steve Perry can stay home, Arnel's got it covered. This was the tightest, most professional rock show I've ever seen. Neil Schon ... the guy is a GOD on the guitar, and he made it look effortless. This show, by the way, was sold out.

I could tell you more, but you get the point.

:hi:

101. Yeah, It was awesome,
There were all kinds of guest musicians and singers. Of course everyone knows this was a studio album for the Beatles and I don't think anyone has ever attempted it on stage. Plus to see Cheap Trick doing anything with their original lineup was worth it. I'll have to go get the C.D. now. Thanks for the post.

58. Jim Boggia and...Jim Boggia. Oh, also Anna Wilson and Monty Powell.
I saw two of the three 11-piece band gigs Jim Boggia did recently. One was for a radio festival, and the other was his record release party ("Misadventures In Stereo," available now at Amazon.com...also available on vinyl with a special mono mix).

In between those was a benefit show my wife helped put together for Habitat For Humanity, featuring Anna Wilson and Monty Powell. Anna's a jazzy singer-songwriter, and her husband, Monty Powell has written many #1 songs for country artists like Keith Urban and Tim McGraw.

65. Which show?
I thought the new material was quite good, based on the recordings I've heard (which I think are the tour opener in Wisconsin, a show in Seattle, and one in Texas at Antone's).

Todd's one of my two main musical heroes (the other being Frank Zappa). I've seen him play some amazing shows, and I've seen him play some total crap shows as well.

69. Well...
I saw St. Louis. And you know that I'm a big fan, too. And I'm all for my heroes pressing on, changing and presenting new work vs greatest hits. This is simply not my favorite mode of TR. Good solid stripped down song writing, yes, but sometimes--IMHO--verging on parody. In fact, I think much of the record is a bout the current state of the American male, and I really applaud that, and if it lapses into TR singing from that POV from time to time, so be it. It just didn't present the melodic and modal variety of the Liars tour for me and felt a bit more one-dimensional, i.e., not much soul/funk/crooning/prog detours and byways.

Again, I'm not slamming the show or him. I like a good handful of those songs quite a bit, i.e. Weakness and Bardo and Courage.

Where did you catch him?

72. I didn't catch him.
He hasn't brought the show near me yet, I think. He hasn't scheduled a Philadelphia show yet, though, and a lot of people are theorizing that he's going to do a New Year's Eve show here. I, of course, will probably end up having a gig.

The thing I find interesting about the new material is that some of it really reminds me of earlier material. There's a guitar solo in one of the first few songs that's very much like the progression of the solo in "Couldn't I Just Tell You," and another tune that really reminds me of "The Verb 'To Love'". If I'm thinking of the right song, the opening riff of "Mercenary" reminds me of "The Marriage Of Heaven And Hell."

127. Great show.
I liked Loreena, but wasn't a huge fan; I think she doesn't uncork her voice enough, and doesn't let it rise in the mix as it should. But that night, I couldn't argue with the music. I went for "Mummer's Dance" (can't get enough of the oud) but every damned song was magnificent. And the Fox is probably one of the most beautiful and acoustically perfect venues in the world.

"Mummer's Dance" is a close second. She just plays with melody and lyrics in ways that really inspire me. I didn't even realize she toured until your post! She's not come to Detroit, at least that I'm aware of. So I will continue to just listen to my portable music and wonder what it might be like to see her live. Thank you for your impressions. :-)

She's the huge fan in this house, and so was ready to pounce on Ticketmaster the moment seats went on sale. She managed to get us in the fifth row, closer than I've ever been to the Fox' stage, or to almost any other.

Loreena just finished a European tour, with no scheduled North American shows. :-(

I've seen a lot of bands and my favorites were Danzig, Social Distortion, Live, Bullet For My Valentine, Rob Zombie, and Aerosmith. I really can't pick one favorite but each of these were awesome in their own way.

I was taken to a Creed concert once and they were horrible.. but a band called Tantric opened for them and they were great... would have been better if I had already known some of their music.
