Hmmmm...anyone have any ideas about my dog philboy?
I posted a few weeks ago that he was in the hospital for a few days with HGE (bloody vomit and severe rectal bleeding).

He was hooked up to an IV and received many meds.

Now, he is urinating in the house, which he NEVER did before.

He is drinking way too much. Vet ran a post hospitalization urine sample, and it looked normal. I do not believe he has developed diabetes, because he acts and looks better than ever,,,he has way more energy that he has had for the past few months.

I am taking him to the vet tomorrow night...but does anyone have any ideas? It is almost like his water regulation got screwed up from being on the IV?

Thank you in advance for any responses.

1. Is he on any meds?
Sometimes they cause them to pee more....

Let us know what the vet says, OK?

 for philboy

2. Thank you femmocrat...
I have to give him no more than 2 cups of water tomorrow (Friday), and then catch his urine and bring it to the vet first thing Saturday morning.

She wants to check the concentration of his urine after limited water intake, in order to determine if further kidney blood work must be done.

Little philboy appreciates your well wishes, and so do I!

3. Your vet will have the best answer but
is he urinating in the house with any kind of regularity? I mean is it intermittent and often?

Also, as previously mentioned, some meds will cause them to drink A LOT more, and subsequently pee a lot more.

Also, what kind of dog and what age?

Sorry your pup was sick, philboy.

I appreciate your kind words.

He is completely off his meds now, and is acting more lively than he has in months.

He is attacking his water for no known reason. His initial urine test showed no sign of diabetes or Cushings.

He is a Sheltie, age 11.

He is trying his hardest not to pee in the house, but he is essentially wetting himself as he sleeps. I have been letting him out twice as frequently, but he still wets himself at night. Prostate is good per the vet. It's a mystery so far.

Thanks again for your good wishes.

5. Odd.
So it's while he's sleeping, mostly? Again, your vet will know best, but might be good to limit water intake before bedtime.

Best to you and your pup, philboy.

7. Our Sheltie Jessie did that for awhile after hospitalization for bladder stone
removal. I truly believe she just got used to peeing where ever when she was sick.

9. wow. sorry and good luck with your pup. the only thing i noticed from your post...
"He is drinking way too much."

from my experience, and i may be wrong, but animals never do anything "too much." if your pup needs to drink that much water, he need to drink that much water. if he needs to eat "too much" or "not enough", that is exactly what your dog needs.

animals are not like us. they may exhibit unusual behaviors (to us) but they know what they need.

i wish the best for you and your pup...

good luck.
