3. I guess I'm un-American then...
because I detest Mellencamp's music. I think he's a hack who writes pablum and drivel.

15. and the funny thing about both of them is that the right seems to think they're rah-rah flag waving
neocons. Or at the very least like to steal their lyrics without listening to the whole song for context.

If you judge Mellencamp just by Jack and Diane or songs of his early career I really think you're missing out on a lot of beautiful sentiment. And holy shit does he kick some ass live.

32. Oh boy did I piss off the guy whose comment I responded to
I love my country just as much as the next guy but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that we're far from perfect. I wish they'd stop teaching nationalism in school it's creating a nation of nonsense spewing bobbleheads.

10. There used to be a house along I-91
north of Hartford that was purple with pink polka-dots. It was like that for years - used to see it every time we drove south from Vt to my aunt's place in CT.

That song always makes me think of that place. :P

The boxing motif is pretty amusing, but based on his physique here, he looks like he could've been a fine featherweight(?). :P

Presuming she's the same woman who tours with the band, she's incredibly talented.

30. Yup, that's her.
She studied violin at Indiana University with Joseph Gingold, and boy, was her mom pissed off when she went off and wrote her ticket playing gypsy fiddle and doing various music things on the Chicago theatre scene (if you've seen the PBS production of Steppenwolf's Grapes of Wrath, that's her fiddling there, too). Ended up working with Mellencamp -- she's been with the band for over 10 years now.

Not many people make it to that level in the music world. I'm incredibly proud of her.

I have a couple of his albums but feel very little compulsion to seek out any more as I don't find him all that unique.

Let's just say that you probably wouldn't want to play in his band

35. A most pleasant surprise was when, a couple of years ago,
I took my son to see John Mellencamp and John Fogerty in concert .

Now I had followed Mellencamp's career from the beginning, and liked a few of his songs, but was never crazy about him. Basically, I bought the tickets to see Fogerty, whom I am a huge fan of. Fogerty opened the show and put on a dazzling performance. It was everything I expected, and then some. Mellencamp closed the show. Well, surprise, he put on a performance that was superb, and at one point, Fogerty came on stage and did a 3 song duet with Mellencamp. It really was a magical night, and since then my fondness and respect for John Mellencamp has risen sharply. I will pay good money to see John Mellencamp again, if the opportunity arises.
